Quite common down under. Neighbours have an SUV and a crossover.
The Seal is pretty damm quick. i4 M50 type power. There is one near by and on the onramp pull its a bit quicker than my standard F80 M3, I’d need stage 1 to stay with it. Pricing undercuts Tesla. Few reports of scab rust appearing in Australia though. Perhaps the steel isn’t treated as well. Last edited by NealfromNZ; 07-11-2026 at 04:29 PM.. |

For reference: Recent Polestar exit from US was due to The Connected Vehicle Rule. Which was passed by the Biden admin. It finally kicked in for 2027 model year. 100% tariff on Chinese EVs was also passed by the Biden admin. They also raised tariffs on solar cells and semi-conductors to 50%. Lithium batteries and battery parts also got raised to 25%. So it isn't just Chinese vehicles, it was a whole host of Chinese tech they trying to keep out of US markets. |

Lengthy article, mostly what has already been discussed.
https://autos.yahoo.com/policy-and-e...180000710.html From the article: The U.S. government is having a version of this argument right now, and it's moving faster than most car buyers realize. On July 22, the Senate Commerce Committee advanced the Connected Vehicle Security Act of 2026 out of committee with unanimous support, and the bill's language goes well beyond banning cars physically assembled in China. It caps foreign ownership of a vehicle's software at 25 percent and its telematics hardware — the cellular modems and control modules that give any car its always-on link to the outside world — at that same 25 percent, with compliance required by 2030. That's the exact hardware category Ruter's engineers just spent months stress-testing in a Norwegian mountain: the physical box that lets a manufacturer talk to a vehicle from anywhere on Earth. The bill isn't only aimed at Chinese brands, either — its ownership thresholds are strict enough to catch legacy European manufacturers with the wrong shareholders, which tells you the underlying concern is the connection itself, not the badge on the grille. |

"Chinese cars are surveillance packages on wheels, with the ability to collect on American citizens and transmit that data back to Beijing," Slotkin said in a statement. https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics...ned-automakers So American government and companies harvesting our data GOOD, Chinese government and companies harvesting our data BAD? Honestly Tesla is pretty bad too. I have all my data sharing options set to off, but it’s not like they honor that. When you disengage FSD there is now a forced survey on why you turned it off. If you don’t take it, you can’t use the entertainment controls and it blocks part of your screen, indefinitely.
Also, if turn your data settings to private, it asks you to turn it back on every week or so. It also relentlessly wants to connect to home WiFi, where you get a different pop up. This is likely to be the last Tesla I own. Fuck Elon. |

It’s just the way of modern cars. We expect online services.
A large portion of us are using telematics modules since early 2010s which has all the vehicle telemetry anyhow. Why would you worry about a car that’s been produced in an alternative country these days. Sounding more like old school local market manufacturing protection. Suprised BMW and Mercedes Benz haven’t been banned as well from USA markets. Maybe BMW get around this by telemetry data been stored and tracked in Florida ? This is the BYD seal thats similar in performance to the outgoing i4 M50 but half the price. https://www.bydauto.co.nz/vehicles/seal#performance-one |

There is a video on Electric Viking on Youtube. He is a big EV guy but he said all of the Chinese EV companies are losing money. Maybe one isn't.
I have new found respect for Schmee (English guy in late 30s or so now). I used to be lukewarm but he blasted politicians on EV and said they are environmental disasters and toxic. He said car makers globally had to waste tens of billions on EV BS instead of improving ICE engines. I also like Schmee because a few years ago he went to Schnitzer to do a video on Schnitzer i8. Sadly, Schnitzer will be closing down which is terrible. |
