Not all new by a long way, they just facelift heavily and call them different models.
The B7 Passat is exactly the same car as the B6 and that was launched in 2005. The Mk5 and Mk6 Golf are virtually the same car too. Small car platforms can run even longer. The PQ24 platform for the Polo/Fabia was launched in 1999 but it's still being sold today. VAG are masters and changing front and rear ends with tweeked interiors and passing the cars off as new. Currently we have a '10 plate 1.4 Golf. This is the only reason why I'm sticking with the 1.4 (I've owned 3 1.4s). Also in the 3 years we've owned the car it has only clocked 8900 miles which is why I'm leaning towards a 114i. Do you still think the 116i is worth it for such a low mileage? Thanks

And yes! I don't see the point in paying the same or £10 or so less for a VW golf when I can have a BMW.. VWs are greater, don't get me wrong, but they aren't as refined as the BMW. Thanks for your advice! I'm off to see my sales guy at BMW tomorrow, I'll update you with that tomorrow. |

Driven the same they will all do vitually the same miles to the gallon. It's all down to purchase price v's power. The 125i is a 2.0litre turbo, M135i is a 3.0litre turbo. In the diesel cars the 114d and 116d ED versions are 1.6tdi, the 116d, 118d, 120d and 125d are all 2.0tdi but the 125d has two turbos. If you are financing you may find a pcp on a 116i is only a little more than the 114i as the gvf is higher. As running cost are the same the little outlay is well worth it for the extra power Cheers Lee Last edited by logiclee; 05-27-2013 at 04:43 AM.. |

It is as simple as this. We would all buy the BMW 1er, however this should be your wife's decision. She will feel comfortable in a Golf as it will feel the same as her current one and as it looks like all the other 10,000,000 Golfs out there, she will be happy with it.
Take your wife to the BMW dealer first take a car for a long test drive and then to the VW dealer. Let her make the decision. |

Check out the rear space if that is important to you too.
The 1er is still tight for space in the rear seats and the rear door openings are quite small. The Golf has much more legroom and easier entry/exit into the rear seats. If you have teens/adults using the back seats often then you may find the f21 a bit tight. Cheers Lee |

Quick Update:
I took my wife to BMW after VW a few weeks ago, she loved the 1series, this weekend I took her to Audi and she disliked the A3 and I disliked the A3 deals. Today we went to BMW and my sales guys pulled through as normal and now we have a 114i Sport. She test drove it while I was sorting out the deal to save time if she liked it and she did! It has just left the factory and should be on a ship within a few days and with us (latest) in two weeks. Thanks for all your help! |

My only advice would be to keep this car a bit longer than 3yrs and 9000mls... it will save you some money probably. |

Wel, congrats on the new car!
I think what KoenG means is just that buying a new car is always quite a big investment. And you always loose money on a normal car and more procentual in the first years. So the longer you keep a car and the more you 'get out of it', the more money you can save to buy a new car every 10 years or so.. Thats how I see it, please correct me if I'm wrong, Koen.

So assume you buy a 114i at 24k and after a year it drops to ... 18k (lost 6k), so the year after... you'll lose additional 4k (lost 10k already), and then the third year, you lose about 3,5K. When you hand in your car then, you'll get 24-6-4-3,5= 10,5k for your 3 years old low milage car. So it's about 4,5k a year you lose. With the same reasoning, you'll easily see that you'll lose only about 3k a year whrn holding to this car for 8yrs, since it'll still be prestine seen your low milage! No? |

I don't really want to MOT the car and if the car does start to cause problems it can be very expensive especially if its a BMW. Maybe if I didn't use BMW/VW it would be cheaper but I would rather have piece of mind. Due to this I keep changing the cars every 2-3 years. |

Do any of you have BMWs tyre insurance? Also do you know if the tyre insurance covers the car or the person (i.e. a particular person can claim 4 tyres for different BMWs)? |

Its a good thing u got the 114. The A3, golf 1.2/1.4 are using 7sp dry gearbox. Being a user of this gearbox, the clutch will slip after a hot drive and the MU will just give itself up after 1-2 years depending on mileage. VW are having engine issue as well. Do goggle up on 1.4 twin charge/ single charge engine..
