F20 114i Sport or A3 1.4 TFSI sport?
The wife currently has a 59 plate golf 1.4 so it's time to change it. To finance a golf cost pretty much the same as a 1 series..
What would you recommend: BMW 114i Sport Audi A3 1.4 TFSI Sport Or VW Golf 1.4 S. All three of the above are pretty much the same to finance give or take £10. Thanks Last edited by E60MKF; 05-23-2013 at 11:25 AM.. |

Seeing as this is a bmw forum I think reactions are going to be subjective
I havent sat in an audi or golf for ages but I like to think the bmw has nicer interiour and ofcourse better ride qualities because its rwd.. If the lady doesnt care paticularly for that, I suppose its a matter of personal taste so let her test drive all 3

The 116i is the smallest engine available in SA so I can't comment re the 1 series, but I would like at kw/weight/extra's of all the cars and decide on that!

I think that 114i stays near 1,2 tsi engines from VAG and 116i stays near 1,4 tsi ones.
Also if the car will be used mainly in the city the 114i would be the normal choice as being more economical. If you want some decent performances you must upgrade to a 116i or other 1,4 tsi models |

The fuel consumption is the same for the 114i and 116i. |

There is also a 1.4TSI with 140 hp that does 0-100 in 8.4 seconds.

Ovekvam, I was thinking at these models:
Audi A3 1,2 TSI SB/ 105 hp: 0-100 km/h in 10,5s; V max 193 km/h; Average consumption: 4,9l/100km; BMW 114i 5 Turer/ 102 hp: 0-100 km/h in 11,2s; V max 195 km/h; Average consumption: 5,5 - 5,7l/100km. Audi A3 1,4 TFSI SB cylinder on demand/ 140 hp: 0-100 km/h: 8,4s; V max 213 km/h; Average consumption: 4,8l/100km; BMW 116i 5 Turer/ 136 hp: 0-100 km/h: 8,5s; V max 210 km/h; Average consumption: 5,4 - 5,6l/100km. These are theoretical data for cars equipped with 6MT. VAG Group has also a variant between these engines: 1,4 TFSI: 122hp: 0-100km/h: 9,5 - 9,8s; V max ~ 200km/h; Average consumption 5,3l/100km. As I have this final engine in my car I know that the values for fuel consumption given by VAG are by far optimistic |

Yes, I have also driven some of these VAG engines as rental cars, and my experience is that they are at least as thirsty as our 116i.

Best FWD proposition now, and seen it is in the low performance tier, RWD or FWD has low relevance for dynamics (not like M135i vs S3 discussions). The Golf will have better traction during wet and slippery conditions. Golf is more practical and build at least as solid as the bimmer. When you get the 140hp Golf, it's probably a rewarding ride also, probably more pleasing than the 114i. |

Just a quick update:
Went to Audi today, their part exchange value only gives me £200 equity and they want £360 per month so Audi is out. BMW and VW are both giving part exchange values which give me £2000-£2100 equity so its either the VW Golf S 1.4 TFSI or BMW 114i Sport. |

But seriously, I would play the 1.4Tsi 140hp Golf against the 116i, no? The 114i doesn't seem a serious proposition? |

I wouldnt have a golf in a million years, its just so common, there's 10000's of them on the road, the interiour is nothing special and the exteriour of the past 3 generations is almost the same, dull styling.
Plus, I seem to recall that VW is very expensive for maintenance!

Worth noting is that the basic engine Golfs (I think including the 1.4 TSI 122 PS) have a different, simpler rear suspension compared with the better engines. I think it's torsion beam versus multilink
Don't let the VW dealer fool you into taking a more powerful unit for a test drive to judge the handling if you are considering the lower powered ones. Also, the BMW will hold its value better than the Golf. The TSI engines require servicing more frequently too (12 months). For me, the biggest deal breaker with the Golf is that the screen is a touchscreen and low down on the dash = difficult to control safely whilst on the move (try pressing an ipad on the move versus an I-Drive rotary dial. Also VW have a 4-year all-new product cycle rather than BMW's 7 year cycle with a minor facelift (LCI) at year 4. Then there's the badge... :P |
