Staying with M sport tires for winter

Am I crazy.? Will they be totally unusable?
I had Hankook summer perforce on my JeepGC and was very ok in snow.

I won't be using her much in snow anyway... I have a work suv for commuting.. But on days off n stuff?
Any experience with these performance tires in snow?

Sorry to get a bit off topic, but I'm in NYC as well and I'm expecting to pick up my X6 M sport in December. What tires do you have on your M Sport? We're they "default " tires or did you choose a specific set for your car?

I'm concerned about the tire situation during the winter in NYC because the run flats that cam with my current car "M Sport as well" and the tires on my current car did not hold up well over the past 2 winters.

Performance tires have zero traction in snow. The compound is not even designed for low temps. There are no "sipes", the little squiggly lines you see in snow tires, which provide biting edges. Yoy might be able to get around, but it's not going to be safe or ideal.

Snow is not the only problem for summer tires. Once temps drop below 32 rubber compound becomes hard as hockey puck. Simple breaking on wet and dry is also diminished.

Don't even think about keeping summer tires for Jan-Feb in NY.

I'm probably going to get 20" Conti DWS 06 for winter.

I wouldn't do it. The tires on the 20" Msports are summer only tires and you will have zero traction in the smallest amounts of snow/ice. Not to mention just the cold temps will make the rubber hard like a hockey puck so even in dry conditions you are really compromising the safety of yourself and your passengers.

there's a guy selling a set of 20" snow tires on the classified section now. One tire has a bubble but you can replace that one and still be under 1K for tires.

All great points. I know the rubber compound on summer tires is no good during freezing temps. As far as traction goes, the M sport tires don't have the best for hazardous weather conditions either.

Does the M sport package for the X5/X6 come standard with summer run flats, or all season tires as a default tire?

Did you all order a specific tire package for your cars in the NYC area?

275 front and 315 rear?

I had a 2010 535i RWD with summer dunlops and used those tires for 3 winters in Northern NJ..

Did it drive fine in the winter in both dry and wet conditions? Yes.
Did it drive fine over plowed snow? no, but it was doable.
Would winter or All season tires drive better? Absolutely...

This is my experience anyway.. and I suspect AWD would be slightly better.

on my previous X5, I found out the hard way...
believe it or not, I didn't know the vehicle comes with performance tire...lol, and 1 day before delivery in Feb (!) the dealer asks, did you want winter tires?!
so there I was with an additional $4k that i had to pay, to have winter tires on them before I could bring the vehicle out of the dealership without sliding home!
That's why on my next vehicle, I'm going all season...I know it doesn't look as pretty as the 20" wheels I had, but I literally had them on the vehicle 5 months in a year, plus all the costs associated to tire swap (twice a year), not to mention the time I had to put in to take the car...

For OEM summer tires, you get either SP SPORT MAXX GT DSST, CONTISPORTCONTACT 5 SSR SUV, and I think Perilli it all depends on what tires are available at the time of production at the factory.

mine were Pirelli Scorpion winters and they were great...on 19".

I used the Pirelli all seasons last winter with no issues. Made many trips up the mountain in deep snow with no issues. Once I had to use chains due too solid ice on the road. I know my situation is different since I have 19's, but all seasons have performed well so far.

Based on my experience summer tires on a RWD/AWD are doable as long as your not driving up snowy or icey steep hills and driving on unplowed or untreated roads. All seasons were perfectly fine for me as well on a RWD car and AWD SUV.

There's something about knowing you have snow tires on your awd X5 that just make me feel all giddy when you go out for the first drive in a snow covered road. That feeling of confidence is worth the price tag of snow tires alone. I had snow tires on my 535xi and it was unstoppable. Now with the X5 and its additional ground clearance it should be even better.

Thanks for the info. Looks like it's a gamble then. I won't actually find out what tires I will have on my car until it's ready for pick up upon delivery.

I guess I will wait to see what they mount on my car, then make the decision to get all season tires if my car is delivered with summer tires.
