Get a Wrangler Rubicon - which can tow 5,000 lbs. Enough to pull a trailer with the SXS to many adventures, and tow a small camper for other adventures.

If you need more capability, buy a Defender - they can tow 8,000 lbs+.

These are all vehicles that can take you to adventures with the whole family, not collect dust in a garage. Sports car appreciation is a mirage. Invested money will always return a lot more.

The Bronco is way underrated in tow capacity. He can tow an RZR on trailer with it easily.

You've fallen out of love with the R8 because you're not driving it. Having multiple drivers cars takes an intentional rotation. For example I switch mine out weekly or if one needs service.

So either drive it or swap it for something like this Ferrari 360 Roadster

Do you have any experience with offroad vehicles in general?

Just a general observation, the "roughness" of going off paved surfaces can be quite different. I am a on and off road motorcyclist and every time I drive any kind of four wheeled offroad vehicle with a seated position, I am reminded how much I don't like the experience. Having a 350 pound bike with 10" of suspension travel and being able to stand on the pegs for really rough stuff is what I prefer, 10" of suspension on a 2000lb vehicle in a seated position where the shock goes into my back is not my thing, even though it is obviously super popular in the larger society.

Just an idea to weigh out, maybe rent something first if you don't have any firsthand experience. 40mph on the rough desert road is a lot different than 40mph on a smooth highway.

50k for a side by side....there's no way in hell. I'm assuming these things depreciate faster than German sports cars. Not everything's a financial decision....but damn there's just no way there's 50k of fun in a side by side even if you used it every weekend of your life.

If I had fallen out of love with the R8, this would be a no brainer...but this is more a case of just obsessing about having a badass sand toy.

I'm starting to try to figure out how to have both without getting a divorce at the same time

I might just sell the sea doos and maybe just get one of the less expensive models like a Maverick X3 RS which are still pretty badass....that is another option

considering it is about 90% capable of a $400K trophy truck and more versital(sand, rock crawling,etc) they are not that crazy and they are 100% worth every penny to those who are lucky enough to enjoy them that often....it is definitely a lifestyle that people enjoy

btw, you can get a brand new capable sport sxs in the high $20K OTD range, the $50K range just gets you the biggest and baddest....which is unfortunately the one I really want. I just know me to well to know if I buy the lesser one I will soon be regretting it and selling it for one of the top models

Your R8 is an appreciating asset. The RZR is a nuclear depreciation bomb. Make sure your wife understands that while you go look for other toys.

Be sure to explain the carrying costs etc and give her a full financial breakdown. You can even use Claude or something similar to prepare her a nice report. I find that people have a much harder time arguing with numbers.

for sure, as I noted in my original post...not the greatest financial decision

yes the R8 is definitely going to hold its value and most likely continue to climb , but the used market is pretty strong on certain side by sides due to all the dealer fees that come with the new ones...sometimes it comes down to smiles per mile

I live about 2.5 hour drive from the Mecca of the side by side world(Glamis)
also plenty of other great spots for these things withing a 2-6 hour drive, so you can see why I have been seriously considering this move.

still trying to figure out a way to have both, but it would be much easier with a pocket full of cash from selling the R8

they are now 21 and 24....One has just graduated from UCI grad school and has moved to LA, the younger one, my baby girl, still lives at home.

Sounds like a huge hassle to have to trailer a side by side 2 to 6 hours for some fun. Plus, you'd need to buy a trailer and those aren't cheap at all. A used Raptor will CERTAINLY have it's own set of expensive issues as Ford, for the life of them, continue to struggle with making the Ecoboosts reliable (hello cam phasers and other crap that routinely fails on them). Then there's all the money of trailering a vehicle. You'll be getting 10mpg, if that.

Why not keep the R8 and buy a $10-15K Jeep or Nissan Frontier and set it up for decent offroad use? I didn't say Tacoma as resale on those is dumb and the Frontier is just as capable, reliable, and cheaper. Going this route would mean you don't have to worry about getting a trailer or adding two vehicles to the fleet that requires maintenance and repairs instead of just one? If you fall in love with offroading, then sell the R8 and Jeep/whatever and then get a side by side, ideally a slightly used one for significantly less money than new.

yeah, lots to consider....these wouldn't be just a one day trip so you know this will lead into a whole other journey down the rabbit hole with toy haaler, etc...

I'm slowly walking back off the ledge, but I want one of these badly....I already have a Bronco for most of my local trails and other fun off road stuff, but it is nowhere near the same experience of a rig like the Maverick R or Pro R ...they are basically a cross between a dirt bike and a sports car.
