Oh yes, I was at that hotel. It was very nice, we were there for a few hours hanging out one evening after being at The Lake during the day. We didn't stay there though, we stayed in West Yellowstone.
A picture of my car next to Yellowstone Lake earlier in the day. And this was the grainy cell phone picture I took that night from the parking lot at the hotel, next to the lake. Last edited by KevinGS; 08-02-2025 at 05:33 PM.. |

Awesome trip and photos! I’m just reading as I’m finishing a one-way trip from NorCal, through California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado to drop my daughter at grad school in Boulder. Was epic - unfortunately had to do it in a rental SUV due to the required hauling capacity, but the views are always inspiring, and I love seeing the changing landscape as we work our way eastwards. We topped out at the Eisenhower tunnel at 11,158ft just before descending to the Denver metro area - I couldn’t quite work out the logic - “alright guys, 11,158ft is enough climbing, it’s now time to go through the mountain”

If you guys ever in Oregon, check out the town of Imnaha. It’s in Eastern Oregon with Summit Ridge bordering Idaho. Some very dramatic views there. The town also has a small tavern which also serves as a grocery store. They have rattlesnake kill count on the wall lol.

Great thread! I've commented on a few of yours previously, but Yellowstone and its surroundings and driving the Beartooth was one of my best road trips ever... sadly back in 2012. I need to get back there pronto! Also did Pike's Peak in 2014/2015. Took the cog rail up there.

When I visited in 2012, I made my bookings 6 months in advance of July because I absolutely wanted to stay in the park (and they were getting booked fast already!). Sadly, I couldn't afford the more expensive grand hotels or lodges being a student at the time, so I stayed in one of their cabins, which were very simple and rustic but still amazing - it catered well to the 'wilderness' aspect of the park.

![]() We shouldn't confuse the great unwashed that haven't been there yet. ![]() And, since that was your West Coast Trip Part 1, were you able to get West Coast Trip Part 2 in this year as you had hoped? Last edited by snowbimmer; 08-04-2025 at 09:03 PM.. |

And I came across the northern section, from the Devil's Tower through Big Horn and into Yellowstone. And that part of Wyoming, with all of its rolling hills and prairies, was stunningly beautiful. But Banff was the star of the trip. And so I'm torn, because I really want to go back to Banff, and pass through Glacier National Park in Montana. But I probably should do the southwest, since I've never been to Arizona, New Mexico or the Grand Canyon (though I've been to Vegas, LA, San Diego, and San Fran). And I've already been to all of the southern states, since I've driven to Dallas from MD, across the south. My thinking is I'm going to drive back to Banff, because I want my car (whatever fun car I have at that point) back on some of those amazing roads. And I think I'm just going to just fly into the southwest, rent a car, and see as much as I can for a few weeks. |

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

If you are out in Montana near Missoula, you must take Route 12 to Kooskia, Idaho. One of the best US roads I've been on. Fantastic.

I've done a few trips solo like you without having a preset itinerary/destination and just booking accomodation about 2 h before I anticipated stopping for the day. I never thought about asking for cancellations at prime locations though- wish I knew that before! Now with a young kid, there's no chance we can risk that for the foreseeable future.
