Concerning the rust, hope BMW fix and do a recall asap. Probably a part from a different/cheaper supplier |

Not very good
I had a check on my F30 bought in July and yep, both seat bases have rust marks. New F20 arrives next week and I guess that will have the same problem. No news from BMW HQ yet?

Same here on my Feb 2012 build 118i. Extensive rust on both seat bases.
Cape Town's winter is quite humid, but this is not great to see... |

Well I think it's clear to see that this is not a localised humidity problem and is more likely a supply chain problem.
BMW have obviously had a contaminated supply and this needs to be addressed, I wonder how long it'll be before they claim responsibly and do something about it? |

Checked mine, got the rust under both seats aswell. Not much but it's still there. And we all know about rust, doesn't matter if it's just a tiny bit right now... it will spread.
Mine is a late 2011 build... seems like this issue is present no matter what build-date?! |

There ain't no shortcuts to quality. BMW will loose alot of customers going down this path. People are not stupid, obviously cutting some euros here and there by buying crap-parts from un-reliable suppliers shows. In the end they bite themselves in their own ass and will have a significant cost in replacing alot of parts on alot of cars, but the financial ppl didn't see that coming... as always. One of the main-reasons that people are willing to spend that extra 5-10 thousand on a bmw compared to an equivalent car of another brand is that they could see they actually got something more for their money.... they got quality. BMW might still sell thanks to beeing a strong brand in terms of beeing a high status manufacturer. But the status goes along with the quality, and I'm not sure that releasing FWD Opel safiras MPVs does wonders to the status of the brand either. Especially for a company mocking FWD for decades and profiling themselves as a all-about-(RDW)driving-pleasure-great-performance-premium-machines. |

Mine has been at the dealers this morning for the air con fix (120d auto m sport), both seat bases rusty, examined them and said they will have to wait and see what BMW say about it. They stated that all are the same?? Not good for a car thats nearly three months old!

The Hong Kong BMW dealer informed customers to bring their F20/30 to service center for photo taking of the rusty seat frame, they will then report it to BMW AG to claim for a replacement part. When the new part arrived, they will replace it free of charge.

Just checked mine; July '12 M-Sport - Same issue although it looks less severe than some of the other examples in this thread. Also have a noise from A/C so am going to pop by the dealers today and moan at them...

My F30 is going in to get the seat bases replaced under warranty. Dealer was unaware of the issue on F20 and F30 and no bulletin has been sent but the dealership said that BMW HQ were aware of an issue.

Hi
Response from my Dealer..................... xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx I have seen this on various models, to a lesser degree some bases show no signs of rust others have small specs or spots . The seat base on some of our models have a protective wax coating over the raw metal to restrict the possibility of rust. There are several different handling and manufacturing processes of the seat as well as the vehicle which could lead to the wax either being rubbed off or the possibility of the base standing in a moist environment. The rest of the vehicle body has an electrolysis coating which is applied to the metal before the vehicle is painted. The rust is most likely only found on the underpart of the seat. As this is a component inside the vehicle and not exposed to moisture the risk of rust is very low. AS I have not inspected your vehicle I cannot comment on its condition but from my experience it is normally superficial surface rust and will not degenerate further. I would recommend we replace the seat base however the rust could also be wipped clean and a new layer of wax could be applied. I do not believe that there is any other area which is affected as this is the only place that does not have E-coat over it. |

I have the same problem with my 116d EDE. I live in Belgium.
I read somewhere it's not only the seat plate! Somebody has taken out the middle vents and behind those vents, also rust on the welding of the dashboard frame! I did not check this on my car, but it's a real shame! |

Here I go.
Something tells me that as winter gets closer more rust will come up. After all, it's been a 100% dry summer, but some rusty spots are already visible... |

Mine has some rust on the seat base; this is (at the moment) marginal & purely cosmetic - nothing structural, but as it affects lots of vehicles, and is well known by BMW I wanted to note it early with my dealer just in case it develops into something serious that needs to become a warranty issue.
It's been duly noted. |

I just checked my car yesterday and it is OK for the moment. No rust at all. Maybe the fact that I live in Greece, where we have low humidity and quite hot weather helps the situation. The car is a 116i, built in November 2011 and delivered in December 2011.
