On the HID/LED headlights the inboard inside light (inside the ring) isn't used. Anyone figured a use for that spot?

Does anyone have any idea on this? I'm curious as well as i noticed the other day behind a friend's car's reflection that switching to high beams to not turn the other interior unit on, only the outer unit.

The inner unit is only used as a day time running light. High and low beam both come from the outer unit. BMWs have been that way for several years.

they should turn on depending on which direction you are signaling, to illuminate the intended turning direction

the inner two projectors defiantly dont turn on for anything on my car. Im wondering is there anything at all behind those lens ? is it actually a projector or just a dummy lens

It could be like on the e82's.... The inner headlight lamp will light up when the headlight switch is in AUTO position and...

* you turn the steering wheel(in that direction of that light)...
* you put the car in reverse BOTH inner lamps will light up
* DRL (IF you have setup the system in the BC)

Nope only the outer projectors move when turning \
Does not turn on in reverse
The DRL is the corona rings

But this is just for a NA Spec car, wonder if its different for different markets

Your headlight switch is in AUTO right> ? It makes a difference.

headlights already do this without utilizing the inner lens, when turning the wheel the outer lens swivel in the direction of your turn. the inner lens still serve no purpose

For the record: the difference between Adaptive Headlights and Cornering Lights:

"Adaptive Headlights
The Adaptive Headlights cast their beam in the direction of the curve and ensure better visibility and more safety during night drives on winding roads.
Sensors measure speed, steering angle and yaw (degree of rotation around the vertical axis). Based on this information, small electric motors turn the headlights left or right so the beam falls on the road ahead, guiding you into the bend.
Headlight beam throw control (a model-specific function) means the front headlights are raised at high speeds and lowered at slower speeds, which results in a wider beam for inner-city driving.
The adaptive headlight range control (a model-specific function) takes into consideration the vertical curve of the road. The headlight beam throw control is lowered when driving over a knoll and raised when the vehicle is in a dip.
The result: every single curve is illuminated and the oncoming traffic isn’t dazzled unnecessarily. Driving at night is even safer, particularly when visibility is poor.
Adaptive Headlights are only active when the vehicle is pulling away. They stay switched off when the BMW is in reverse and when the steering wheel is turned to the left while the vehicle is stationary (e.g. when pulling out of a parallel parking space to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic).
Adaptive Headlights are complemented by cornering lights. These are automatically activated at speeds of up to 70 km/h and improve visibility in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle, which is useful when driving along hairpin bends, turning or parking."

When the indicator is activated at speeds below 40 km/h, these lights illuminate an area to the side of the vehicle, up to 80° of the direction of travel.

already tried coding that on, didn't change anything. probably due to the m235i not having foglights . the inner lens don't look like those on the 1M, seems they really are just dummy lens. i still wonder if there is any projector bowl behind them that will accept a bulb

i tried as well, didn't work with the cornering wizard active and lights on auto. Odd though because if you pop the hood, there are two heat sinks....

I think the heat sinks might be for the LED's in the corona rings, just guessing though. Havent seen a HID light that needs external heatsinks

Yes, those heat sinks are for the LED AE's. IF you lookk in RealOEM.com it clearly shows that.

Thanks for the link. looks like the inner lens is really just a dummy. oh well
