Gloss black wheel cleaning/HELP

Hey guys, so exactly like the title states, when are you having luck with breaking down brake Grime but not damaging the finish on the gloss black wheels…

Have tried Dark fury and also Diablo wheel cleaner from chemical guys…

These wheels will be the death of me lol

1. get low dust pads
2. learn to live with less than perfect appearing wheels
3. I use WheelX then just power wash it off, doesn't come out perfect but it's decent

I use Brake Buster as the spray cleaner. It's cheap and it works. No matter what cleaner you use, you have to agitate the wheels. Spraying them and then spraying water doesn't remove all the brake dust. If you are going to use brushes to clean the wheels, use only boars hair brushes. Any other will mar the finish.

Ditto – Brake Buster works very well, in my experience. I've also ceramic coated my wheels, which makes the dust come off much easier – if it isn't too heavy, a quick rinse with my pressure washer along with a spray down of Brake Buster will often get enough of it off to be good enough until the next thorough wash.

I use Brake Buster then use Gyeon Wet Coat which helps in future cleaning.

I should have stated that my wheels are coated as well.

Get some isweep IS2000 pads and your dust will drop 70%. Your pads will not squeal either (your OEM ones will eventually if they are not already). The dust the IS2000 make is much drier, and silvery in color. Its not at tacky/wet feeling as stock dust. It wipes off much easier.

I coat my 343M's with wax polish and wipe off to further delay the grey dust from the low dust TWR pads.

Greetings,

I use a two step approach.

Step One
1. After driving 75 miles, the wheels need cleaning. Yes, sarcasm.
2. I rinse thoroughly with water, then spray heavy duty wheel cleaner from Griot’s Garage.
3. Agitate, brush, massage, clean with a variety of brushes…I typically dip the brushes in Car Wash and Wax soap from GG.
4. Rinse thoroughly.
5. Use my battery powered leaf blower to remove water.
6. Wipe wheels down with microfiber towel to remove any water or brake dust.

Step Two
1. The next day, use GG rinseless ceramic wash to go over each wheel, each spoke, each crevice and all lug nuts.
2. Wipe dry with another microfiber towel for a nice shine.
3. Apply copious quantities of tire shine for that show room finish.
4. Don’t drive the car for several days…but walk by it to admire the wheels.
5. Drive the car and wipe off the brake dust with detail spray.

Okay…a little sarcasm, but you get the point…the brake dust is incredible and cleaning the wheels is time consuming, but once clean…they look awesome.

Love your humor!!

1st: Change out the OEM brake pads to ceramic. It is an ez DIY project.
2nd: The advise above.

Ceramic coating is a must. I like Armor Detail Supply wheel coating.

I use Brake Buster or Adam's Wheel Cleaner when washing (depending on how bad the dust is). Brake Buster is the milder of the two.

For maintenance in between washes I pressure wash with DI water and spray the rotors with Hyde's Ruststopper to prevent rotor rust. It at least makes then look 7/10.

Yes this is a big process but black wheels are a bitch.

Naples Auto Armour, who makes that product you mentioned, are the ones who coated my wheels.

+1 for P+S Brake Buster. Tried Sonax on my black wheels and it didn't work as well and smelled like ass.

I've also heard good things about the Ethos wheel cleaner.

I used Chemical Guys Decon Iron Remover and Sonax Plus yesterday on all wheels, removed them too. I found Sonax to be the better of the two. Ceramic coated them too. The inside of the wheels sure get beat up from tire change outs and balancing.

Same here. Then use the leaf blower>microfiber drying procedure. As soon as its done, I spray them down with 303 Graphene Detailer and wipe them down with a different microfiber.

Its extra work but appears to have a minor effect on the dust that accumulates. You can't quite hose it it off and call it done but it is easier to get to a clean state on these damn wheels.

You only need to change to the ceramic pads (check Akebono for your application) to reduce the black dust.

Thumbs up

Jesus..Sounds like you just need to swap to a full CCB set up..You can get very nice used sets for decent $ in the forums..Now I know you guys are gonna be like - That's just stupid, they're so expensive, too much for street use, yada, yada, yada..

My argument is you buy once, you cry once. Problem solved.

Or you clean your wheels every 3 days with all of these sprays, ceramic coats, special regiments, dinosaur hair brushes, microfiber this and that and the 3rd...At the end of the day you're still spending thousands on all these products and breaking your back over and over for the next 10 years of ownership..Just my 2c.
