Auto Gearbox

Is this the same type of gearbox as the DSG in my current Tiguan?

Entirely depends which version you’re looking at. Some versions have an Aisin 8 Speed torque converter, while the lower output versions use a dual clutch 7 speed akin to your DSG.

Ok thanks, need to do some more diggin’
I find the Tiguan DSG great when accelerating but it can get confused at roundabouts or junctions when you want it to suddenly pick up after it changes down. It is a common issue on the VW forum.

Mine is a 2 litre petrol X drive. It has the 8 speed Aisin box. Super smooth.
My wife’s VW Golf SV 1.4 has a 7 speed DSG. It’s also good but not as good as the Aisin box.

I believe the steptronic is a conventional auto with a torque converter, the DSG is a dual clutch. I used to overhaul and repair Borg Warner 35 autos in the 60’s at a Ford dealership so the Aisin box sounds similar but much more sophisticated.

I've had 2 VWs with DSG and I'm not a fan. The 8 speed Aisin is much better. It's smoother; no upshift or downshift "clunk" and it never hunts for gears going up or down steep or gentle grade.

Glad to know its not just me, found exactly the same. Sport mode was better.

IME, having owned a couple of VWs with DSG, you need to remember it is an automated clutched gearbox, not a torque converter automatic transmission. So, anticipate situations where the automated clutch process gets caught out and try shifting using the paddles as you would a manual car. And don't 'creep' a DSG, as you would an auto because you are actually clutch-slipping (and wearing them out) not torque converter loading as a traditional auto allows.

The Aisin gearbox is good, much better than the DSG, which I personally cannot understand why has a good rep at all.

However, truth be told, it is not as good as the ZF. Especially if you drive it in comfort mode, it can be quite hesitant (almost like the DSG). To be honest, sport mode should be the default one, not comfort, because the gearbox feels so much better.

The Comfort mode is leisurely as intended. The Economy Pro is laid back almost lackadaisical and the Sport mode holds the gears a bit longer. Not useful if you're just putting around town.

Because of the lag with the DSG in The Tiguan, I use Sport Mode on short and twisty country roads. It doesnt change up higher than 4th.

Hi guys I find the Aisin 8 speed sport auto box in my 2 litre xdrive msport much better than our previous 125d msport 1 series with the 8 speed ZF sport auto box it certainly much smoother. I hardly notice it changes gear and certainly it is better at low revs going up hill

I believe the Aisin box is basically a ZF design and same as used in the Aston Martins but with different bearings.
FWIW my car also has paddle wheels. I used these once, but don’t bother as the auto box does the job more than adequately. I have also tested the Eco mode. It does have a free wheel set up, but frankly I feel more in control in comfort mode.
Overall my 2 litre petrol F48 is achieving 38 mpg. Perfectly acceptable for 4 wheel drive

Is that mixed driving ? That's actually the same as my 2 litre diesel, which is weird

Thanks for this. Having ordered my car I was unsure of the mpg in the real world. As I only do 4000 a year I prefer petrol for smoothness and quiet. I find in my Tiguan if I overtake in Sport Mode the engine will rev to cutout if I don't use the paddle to control it.

I have 2.0d xdrive (192bhp version) and am only doing approx 2,500 miles per year at moment most of my journeys are short and stop start but still getting approx 38mpg despite occasional “sprint” when bored. For any longer journeys, even motorway driving at up to (ahem 79 mph) I will get approx 44mpg. On longer journeys, trying to get max mpg it is nearer to 50mpg. 99% of my driving is in comfort mode. I tried leaving in eco mode for a week and on local short journeys economy went from 38mpg to 39.2mpg but found this mode irritating as acceleration really stifled.
In brief, Very happy with real world fuel economy.

P.s, I forgot to mention, I try always to use SHELL diesel, if I ever use supermarket brand the fuel economy drops by at least 1.5mpg and once using Sainsbury’s Fuel,it dropped by nearly 3mpg. Imo, the car prefers SHELL to BP or other premium brands. For avoidance of doubt, I do not work for SHELL OR get any discounts and finally SHELL is often the most expensive fuel in my area.
For US forum members please note my mpg is imperial not US gallons.
