My wife's 2016 X1 has a burned out rear bulb(s?) that illuminates the two red light strips on the tailgate portion of the taillight assembly.

I am not sure which bulb(s) this is and I would like to place an order.

Can anyone help me locate the right bulb?

Please find ISTA BMW workshop diagram showing layout. The tailgate light is 2/3 way down. There are different configurations dependent on whether you have option S5a4a or not. There are 2 bulbs and led module if you have led lights and 3 bulbs if you do not. The three are reversing light (same for both options) . The main visible bulb which in US is brake light and then either a tail light bulb or an led module. I suspect from your description that it is The led module that lights the two fibre optic conductors which has gone. if you do not have option S5a4a then it will be the bulb (4) which has gone.
I cannot see a part number for the led module and have a nasty suspicion it is built into the plastic . The part you are asking for depends on left or right side but is called rear inner tail light bulb/led module.
Let us know if a complete new housing had to be ordered, they are available used.
