Steel brake question
So I have the steel brakes on my F90 and they screech a lot in traffic. If they are hot or cold just anytime I am in stop and go traffic I feel like I am driving a 15 year old junk car.
I already had my dealership replace the pads and rotors and they are still making noise but at least not grinding as if there was no pad material left. Do your steel brakes make this noise at low speeds? Is this normal for an BMW M car? |

Not normal IMO but it was an ongoing issue with the F10 M5.
I was never able to get it resolved on my 13’ F10 M5 and luckily my current 15’ F10 M5 has not had that issue. If you go to the F10 M5 Forum and do a search for squeeky brakes you may be able to locate some of the solutions / service bulletins that solved this for some owners and maybe apply the same logic to your current situation.

I've noticed my steel brakes are (were) very grabby, but not noisy. They've seemed to be less grabby and brake linearly with 1000 miles on them, but have never had any noise.
I had steel brakes on my F83 M4 and never had a noise from those either. |

Didn’t happen today though. I have about 600 miles on the car. I intend to bring this up with the dealer when I get my 1200 mile service.

I had the grinding noise on my M5 when they replaced the rear pads but not the discs. That settled after a while. But apart from that no noise.

Mine are not noisy at all, but they seem a little too touchy. 150 miles on the car.

I agree with OnfireX5, did you bed in the brakes properly? It appears that when my X5M makes the brake noise I get up to speed (80) or so and hit the brakes hard down to 25 or 30 and up to speed again and repeat. Never come to a complete stop!! This seems to work for awhile. Also, like Onfire said car washes seem to help. It is worse in hotter weather.

There are 2 types of Squeals. The first type is the actual pad hitting the rotor squeal. That one can be mitigated by a proper "bed in" procedure. The second type is an actually vibration of the pad in the caliper when the brakes are applied lightly(IE coming to a stop in daily driving). That one can be taken care of by using Anti Squeal brake pad paste on the backs of the brake pads to provide a cushion in the calipers, to stop the micro vibrations that cause the squeal. Many of us get these squeals because a few years back BMW started saying NOT to use the anti squeal paste on the backs of the pads when doing brake jobs. But they know that vibrations in calipers cause squealing. That is why they changed the pad design for the f10 M5 in 2014.
I don't have any noise on my F10 cause I put paste on the back of my pads. I ride motorcycles too, and if I don't use anti squeal paste on my brake pads, I get squealing brakes on the bikes too.

I had my car in the LA area for the last couple of months. The squealing was constant. Couple weeks ago, I drove it back home to Phoenix. Squealing is nearly gone. I heard it once and it happened right as the car came to a stop and was almost a light groan (probably brake dust). It no longer squeals when I first apply the brakes like it did before. Only difference I can attribute it to is humidity. 40-60% in the LA area and 8-20% in Phoenix.
Not scientific, but interesting why it would just about stop and nothing else changed. Taking it to the shop anyway. By the way, I got 22 mpg on the way home with the car loaded with stuff and a rack/bike on the top. I thought that was pretty good. |

Mine is completely hit or miss. Can't figure out if it is based on car washes, temperature, humidity level, hot/cold brakes, etc. Most of my driving is around south OC.

My steel brakes have been noise free for the 2500 miles I've put on the car so far. However, they are much more sensitive than the brakes on my previous F10, which didn't screech either.
I do have a problem with them rusting to the rotor after washing. I could avoid that on the F10 with a few back and forths while applying the brakes, before leaving it after a wash. But anything short of driving a couple miles on the M5, and I have to hear them break loose from the rotors after it sits overnight. |

I had same issue with my m6.... I am not sure what they did, but on the third visit they somehow corrected it..... I was also told this is normal for our cars, and many other cars like this, which is true....

The brakes on my M3, GTR, and 911 GT3 ALL squeek and screech. Each different dealer said it's normal...you can try had braking, etc but the noise remains. I've become used to it and doesn't bother. And brakes work well.

So would love a few more folks to try this.
Brakes been driving me nuts (btw) lots on this forum about it. Dealer friend said he reduced the noise by doing (clear open road) a few hard brakes in reverse. I tried it (no need to do more than 30kmh) and braked fairly aggressively 5-6 times. I feel like I've just had some kinda placebo but the brakes are quieter now!! Will update after a week. Please try and let me know. And I can't explain the logic v's forward hard braking. |

I guess a drive right after I wash, is the only solution to the pads rusting to the rotors. |

The calipers are a bit of a pain to get clean. I just use a soft bristle detailers brush, and hope to get in all the nooks and crannies. Maybe if I used a spray wheel cleaner, rather than just soapy water, I could get them cleaner. I may have to move on to a more aggressive approach.
