n55 turbos being replaced at 40k?
Took my 2014 435i into the dealership for a weird noise that happened every once in a while it went away and I didn't hear it again for a day or two. Just got a call today and BMW says they are replacing my turbo. Anyone else have their turbos fail so early? should I expect to have to replace them again at 80K? Thanks guys.

Following also some German F3x and E9x forums, I couldn't read about a high number of N55 turbo replacements.
But everything mechanical is aging. Probably you are lucky and they replace the turbo within warranty at this mileage, whereas we will have to pay for it when our turbo blow up in a few years. However if they replace the turbo, it's a good chance to replace the diverter valve with a GFB one (GFB DV+ T9356). Like this: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-go-fast-...lve/t9356~gfb/ Or at least also get a new original diverter valve installed at the same time!

Wow good catch OP! You are lucky getting these replaced under warranty! Did you replicate the sound at the dealer or did they know what you were talking about as soon as you described this? I'm sure this is not cheap for them, and most dealers would be hesitant to do such a large repair.

Excellent question. Why not any other tune? Warranty. Known good. Someone else deals with it all. Keeps tuning 'sane' at 22psi max. Want to also keep engine temps down here in FL during normal driving so will have plenty of 'performance headroom' on the streets.
Dinan.... No fuss tuning, as tuned a Ferrari for many years (tracked ~60 days a year) when no one else was doing it for 308s, including re-engineering the brakes with the help of ex-Brembo/Ferrari guy Eric at Girodisc, dyno-tuned a modern/uprated ignition system, enhanced/lightened cooling, suspension mods, lightweight flywheel, race clutch, etc so have been-there/done-that and just want someone else to deal with it all. Also did Formula 2000 stuff in SCCA so drove/engineered the track car for two years (earned Driver's Championship). Lots of work when you REALLY want to be on the pointed end of the grid (dry and wet setups, triple adjustable shocks serviced every few months by my buddy at Hendrick/NASCAR team, high and low downforce aero bits, changing gears in LD200 tranny, etc). So yeah, am tired of screwing around with things. Let them deal with it all PLUS Dinan is a known good and keeps warranty. And yes plan to dyno her, 1/4 mile test at local Motorpark straight, and my fave road course tracking with her. If the Dinan tune blows 'er up, it aint my problem

Sounds like you've been around the block a couple of times, and could teach many on here from your experience. I am just at the beginning of modifying this car, and being in college have time to mess around with trial and error. Once I have a full-time job I would much rather prefer something that is covered under warranty and known to last, as leaving your car in the shop for a week with no rental gets to be old when you rely on it to make a living. I am just getting into SCCA Blueridge Region with my GT as well as looking for a lighter RWD track oriented car to learn with, and not be afraid to put into a tire wall I was working an event at VIR last month and the GTS2/3 cars were a blast to watch, let alone the Thunder race and being able to hear it from a mile away. That's the goal someday, sounds like you were around that point just in a different class of cars!

Awesome! Yeah, for fun in SCCA as a beginner i'd start with a Miata as they're cheap, easy, and plenty of knowledge and go-fast bits within the regs. Lots of good driver learning with a momentum car.
Unasked for advice: Start driving as much as you can in the wet with her, and yes dry too. Car control clinics are your friend. Plenty of great books out there, too, and personally hung out with the late great Carl Lopez (Going Faster! Mastering the Art of Race Driving). Take TIME and learn at HPDE events, imho, as you get good seat time. Remember, even Formula 1 drivers have driving coaches. Oh, and stay hydrated!!! Be kind to your engineers, they save your life.
