Excessive Tyre Noise

I have just taken delivery of a X1 with Bridgestone potenza non runflat tyres and are very disappointed with the amount of Tyre noise.

This starts at 60mph and therefore makes it uncomfortable on a motorway - you need to turn the radio up and talking to passengers is difficult

What tyres do you have and are they noisy?

Thanks

Chris

I got my car around 3 weeks ago and I have 18 inch Bridgestone Turanza on non runflats with optional EDC. I do not have any problems with tyre noise particularly at 60 mph on a motorway.

Seems strange that we have different types of tyres

I got the 19" Bridgestone Potenza runflat, and they are LOOOUD!!
If the asphalt is a bit rough they sounds real hard even at low speed, almost like driving on hockey pucks.
On perfectly smooth roads they are just about acceptable.

I wish i got other tyres than these crappy Bridgestone

I really like my X1, everything is great except the noisy Bridgstone RFT tyres, they really dont work on this car

Mine came equipped with the Dunlop 19" RFT and I would find it hard to imagine the Potenzas are any louder. Guess the grass is not always greener...

Maybe you are right, but I will most definitely NOT choose any run flat tyres when these have to be replaced...

Interesting, IIRC the RFTs are a £180 option in the UK.

Glad to the hear ( very droll ) that the Tuzana non-RFTs are ok.

Yes, Bridgestones generally, and the Potenzas specifically, are very noisy tyres in my experience. One of the reasons I downsized to 18" wheels when I ordered my 25i. The Pirellis (P7 - RFT) are much quieter than I expected.

I have the exact same setup as Claret21 and just over 4 weeks in. I live next to the M27 near Southampton which has the worst surface I have experienced (concrete motorway) but I have to say I am happy with the noise levels in the X1.

Of course this is a very subjective topic - noise level - and everybody will have a different opinion - even those with the same setup.

I think the F48 lacks sound deadening in the wheel arches/underbody. As I said I have the Dunlop's and these are quite on my F10, which is excellent from a sound point of view despite running on 20" wheels. On the F48 the same tyres on 19" wheels with a larger sidewall transmit a lot more sound into the cabin at speed on rough surfaces

Interesting. I wonder what the test regime is, because it doesn't match my driving experience. I rate Bridgestones far noisier than most other tyres, but the Potenza 050A' s that I've fitted to previous cars (GTI, S3) gave excellent wet and dry grip/braking. No doubt it's like those fuel consumption standards.

Bridgestone Turanza T001 225/50 R18 99W XL are rated B, B and 71dB - just to complete the picture - these are EU ratings so will not be found by our North American and Antipodean forum members

Apparently the test is carried out by the manufacturers themselves, by using a microphone at the side of a track with a car driven past at 50mph.

If this is correct then the db rating is only a guide to what can be heard outside the car and not what noise the tyres transmit from the road to the driver inside.

I suppose like most things noise, mpg etc are always going to show better on paper than real life.

off topic, when are forums/blogs etc going to have a combined UK/US spell checker..........tyres/tires, colour/color etc.

Gosh, nothing to see there, then...I was wondering why they all seemed so closed. After Dieselgate/ Mitsigate etc, the manufacturers are not to be trusted! No doubt Bridgestone run theirs over a mirror smooth linoleum based surface...unseen in the real world.

To be honest, none of them have ever been trust-worthy.
For example, BMW motorcycles were failing emissions years ago, there's plenty of info out there.

VAG just took it another level despite being given fair warning, many, many times. The leadership wanted to beat Toyota, they did - wasn't worth it though, eh?, they ( mgt) got their money, we're now having to deal with it.
