Question Right exhaust flap mod

I know this has been brought up on the other model forums, but just checking if anyone has been successful on getting the exhaust flap actuator in the open position to unplug? Looking to get more sound out of the exhaust and have it look better than having only one pipe clean all the time.

Tried...
- waiting for the flap to open during a cold start (nothing)
- selecting sport mode (nothing)
- revving the engine past 2k, 3k and 4k (nothing)

Right now I'm just thinking of doing the golf tee mod since I can't get the darn thing to open ... http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...t=exhaust+flap

Here are some other threads that explains the flap.

I had mine take a pin out and weld it permanently open. Never opens from the looks of it. Disconnected the plug and still did not open. No performance issues so far. sounds a lot better.

Went out for a quick drive this morning. About 15 miles - 30 mins - in comfort mode and mostly about 35-40 mph (max 62 mph). Kept engine running when I arrived back home and went to the back of the car - exhaust was coming out of both sides.

I have an xLine 20i in the UK

Any update on this to know if the 25i/28i has a flapper and if so, can it be opened?

I've never specifically looked on my x28i however when washing the car there was some exhaust soot on the right side indicating it's open at least sometimes.

Yes, it opens under the right circumstances and you are moving.
Most 4 Series are the same, it wont open if you are standing still, only when moving.

Only the 25i (called the 28i in North America) has the valve

Did this mod to my 2017 X1 28i.
Very simple, just grab a set of pliers and punch the c-clip and if will pop right out. By hand, flip the flap into the open position and it should stay. Mine did and have not had any issues with it.
Sounds better and the black buildup on the tips is now on both and not as significant since it's mitigated over both tips.
Idle is deeper and sounds way better.
I notice some more burble when upshifting and occasional downshift pops when driving hard. Mm
No drone or codes or issues.

I have a X25Li, the right exhaust pipe is much cleaner than the left one...Just like you added a fake one on 1.5T X1...

Hi, I have some questions about this mod.
1. Is the flap moving thightly or loose? If you don't use wire to keep flap open, will it stays open or there are chances it closes by itself?

2. Since its easy to remove the c-clip that control the flap, is it also that easy to reinstall it if needed?

3. Could there be some indesirable long term effect or damage on exhaust or the flap only play a role in the noise control and catalytic converter heating?

I'm interested in making this mod for philosophic reasons. There are 2 exhaust tips so the smoke should come out each them so the right tip does not look like a fake one installed by a 16 years old guy on his 2005 honda civic. :-)

Here are my two cents. I've done this "flap mod", "golf tee mod", or whatever you want to call it on both my 335 (before I got the M perf exhaust), and now the X1. Been driving my X1 with the C clamp out now for about 900 of the 920 miles I have on the car.
I've had no issues. You should be fine reinstalling the c clip with some pliers, patience, and a few minutes on your back.
The flap does stay open without propping it open with wire tie or some other reversible method. But, I did notice some rattle recently so the flap seems to have drifted into a rattle position. I was able to swing it back in the non-rattle position in three seconds and all was well in the world again. I do think that perhaps a little wire tie may help to secure the flap open. It's easily reversible when you have to return to stock and it should take care of "flap-drift".

To answer your questions directly:
1) the flap moves easily, but seems to stay in place pretty well. However, I think a little wire tie will go a long way. I don't think it will go from open to close quite so easily though.
2) yes it's pretty easy.
3) I think you'll be totally fine. I've never had any issues, and I don't think you'll find anyone (maybe one outlier, but still doubtable), that had any problems due to the flap mod. It's mainly for sound that I am aware of. I've never noticed any change in warm up times before or after flap mod or any adverse behaviors with the motor and/or cats. Look at it this way; if you were to put on an aftermarket exhaust; let's say a BMW M Performance exhaust; it has no flap. That's got to say something?
To flap, or not to flap. That is the question.

Good point. And the BMW PE does sound awesome on my 335i. Be great if BMW made one for the X1. I've seen a video of a Remus exhaust on an X1. Not sure what year or if it was more custom made. Don't see it available on Remus site.

BTW, I think the right exhaust opens on full throttle.

Dumb question but what exactly is meant by 'punching the c-clip so it pops right out'? I stared at it but I wasn't sure how the mechanics of it work. Seemed like I would want to pull it off. Is there a separate spring that's supposed to pop out as well? I looked at the pics in the link above for the gold tee mod but i'm not sure exactly what to pry away/open.
