High Octane Fuel in 20d or 25d xDrive ?

My car (xdrive25d) is in production as we speak and I can't wait for delivery!! I intend to run it on Shell V-Power exclusively!

Just out of interest, how many of you guys out there run your X1 on high-octane fuel (Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate etc). I'm sure that i read that BMW recommends 98 RON fuel in the brochure somewhere.
For those that are using it, are you noticing any better performance, mpg, engine sound, etc ?

Thank you in advance!

25D is diesel, isn't it....in which case there's no doubt preferred diesel brands...

I recommend you don't use RON98 ;-)

Personally, I use V-Power Diesel for no other reasons than:

1. has more detergents, so over the long term, less gunking.
2. I can tell the difference in the way the engine feels.
3. cheaper than BP.

Any improvements in MPG, power are offset by the extra cost of the stuff. Not sure you want a diesel for the soundtrack!

I agree ... I can tell the difference using shell v power diesel, the engine is quieter and feels more responsive... I also think I get a couple more MPG.

I might keep the car for a few years (even though metalic black needs a lot of TLC ) and from reading the motoring press, there does seem to be a longer term benefit with respect to additional detergents.

Thanks guys! I hope I'm not being cheeky but any chance anyone with a 20d or 25d can take a picture of the inside of the fuel filler cap? I'm wondering what BMW actually recommend!

Sorry I have trouble with pics on my PC however, just had a look and it just says on the cap

"No Additives. No Biodiesel. Max B.7 "

(I think regular diesel can have up to a certain (5%?) amount of biodiesel).

No other labels in the filler area

I am using both Shell VPower Diesel and BP Ultimate with Active +. Somehow the Shell fuel makes the car feel more sporty and quitter. Both give extra mileage, in motorways and controlled speeds, I do 47-50mpg or 6.3-5.4 l/100. Tank (61lts) lasts for about 850kms per fill (average figures). I do use though BP more, because of proximity of gas station and far cheaper in price here ( about 8Eur difference per tank fill)

Thanks mate! I was hoping that someone regularly using VPower or BP Ultimate might be getting over 50mpg. But the fact that you say the car is quieter and sportier is worth it alone!!

Thanks for looking mate - I'm surprised that it doesn't say something like 98RON and min 95RON etc. My 2GT says min 91RON and 95RON recommended!

It's a diesel, I'm sure the RON numbers refer to petrol, which is why some other people had you confused.

As far as the difference goes I couldn't tell you, but this page might give you some info on octane(petrol) and cetane(diesel).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

I had an old Toyota diesel about 10years ago and ran that on neat veg oil straight from the shelves of Tesco, I'm sure the X1 would probably run on it for a bit but wouldn't want to try it. I believe the original diesels were designed to run on peanut oil amongst other stuff.

Probably the marketing budget...

Surely the V-Power Diesel is cleaner therefore not forcing DPF regens frequently even if not for the mpg and performance gains right?

You might get less regens, but a lot of that depends on the type of driving you are doing.
The difference between premium diesel and cheap diesel argument has lots of discussion all over the internet. It seems to boil down to user preference.

For our Golf MkV GTD, dpf regens seemed to depend entirely on the type of driving being done, not the fuel used. In my opinion, the notion of "premium" diesel is simply to piggyback on the premium petrol story (which does make a difference to both power and economy) for some strange margin. No diesel supplier says its standard, cheaper diesel is dirtier; that'd be crazy!
