My X1 20i Sport

I took delivery of my new X1 yesterday, have taken it for a couple of spins but haven't had too much time to play with the gadgetry as yet. The spec is:

- X1 20i Sport
- Black Sapphire
- Black (+ red) perforated leather seats
- Sport auto transmission
- Sun protection glass
- Heated front seats
- Sliding rear seats
- Brushed aluminium trim
- Driver comfort package

So, first things first: I'm 6ft7, so I don't so much test drive cars as try them on for size. The sports seats in this vehicle fit like a glove and it was very easy to find a setting that provided excellent support.

I traded in my old 3 series coupe (because the road on which I live - see pics - doesn't really suit its low clearance and I got fed up with inching along trying to avoid the inevitable bottoming-out) which suited me fine and drove very nicely. My first impression is that the 20i drives even better and, although you don't initially notice it because of the increased ride height, faster too. I've taken it on some single track country lanes and have been amazed by the precision and lack of body roll. Gear changes are smooth and the car is very quiet although you do notice the tyre noise on some surfaces (18" Bridgestones).

I haven't played too much with the electronics but the satnav is bang up to date (even with temporary speed limits on roadworked sections of the M3) and easy to set (although I haven't yet work out how to "save" particular destinations). I really like the fact that the prevailing speed limit is displayed below/between the dials. I'm loving being able to listen to the rugby (and football) on Radio 5 on the DAB, and the hifi hooked up to my iPhone via bluetooth with no trouble at all, tunes sounding pretty good on the standard system.

My only (minor) gripe is that the driver's door seems to be a little small for my frame and getting in is not as easy as I expected (although easier on the knees than my 320Ci). Having said that, this is the first car I've owned where I can sit comfortably and have an adult seated behind (and that includes the family's XC90).

So far, so excellent.

Oh and by the way, when I collected the car from the dealer he said (and clearly you can take this with a pinch of salt, should you wish) that [in the UK] the X1 has become BMW's biggest seller. If you were to order the 20i today you'd be looking at August delivery...and you wouldn't get any discount (!)

2mWingspan from your height I guess

You are one of the lucky few to have taken delivery of a 20i petrol version. I ordered mine Mid January and delivery is expected end of June.

I am just over 6 feet but still have to be careful with headroom - the X1 was like a catherdral so I can see why you like it so much.

Congrats on your new ride

Looks great. Saw my first (Other) X1 on the road today, and it was black too.

Great to hear about your excellent purchase and initial experience, as well as the roominess. However, I have no envy of your colour choice, given the roads you've pictured!

Congrats

Let us know what you think of the 20i engines suitability for the F48.
