Found another 12v power socket!!!

Yippee

I was about to order a 'piggy back' fuse cable from e-bay to see if I could wire in a dash cam and free up my front 12v socket. I've just had another poke round the fuse box area and guess what?

I remember reading somewhere the X1 had a 12v power socket in the passenger foot well but initially I couldn't see it. Anyway....it's there!!
It is underneath the glove box, transmission tunnel side, in line with the foot well light. There is no cover on it so when I initially looked I thought it was just a hole for a fixing...but it's not...and it works

That means we have 4 X 12v sockets (centre console - 1 front and 1 for rear seats, 1 in the luggage compartment, 1 in the passenger foot well). That has saved me a lot of hassle.

That's a fantastic find! I was looking at the owner's manual (app version) and that didn't mention the foot-well 12V socket, so I thought I had misread someone's comment about that earlier. Hope Aust spec cars have that too, then there's no need to hot-wire the dash cam at all.

I just noticed on the UK configurator in the options it shows 12 V Socket as included in package....description says it is located in passenger foot well...this was not there when I configured my car in Dec.

Neat. The old X1 has this as well. If you didn't know about it, I doubt you would ever find it.

While cleaning the car today I found the same spare 12V plug under the passenger side footwell on a US Spec X1.

Respect! Found it now: I'd heard that it was somewhere down there, but didn't see it when I looked before.

Oh... so it's not in all cars then. Can anyone from Australia check their car for the extra 12V socket please? 😊

Have you used this socket for a dash cam? In my UK spec car this socket stays live even when the car is locked and is therefore not suitable for a dash cam etc.

I do use it for a dash cam. On mine it is ignition based and not a permanent feed. It stays on for a few minutes or so after you turn ignition off. I would have thought they were all wired the same?

For anyone interested, I ended up buying the Mio Mivue 568 Dashcam (see below) because I wanted something with speed camera alerts. It seems to pick up the fixed cameras really well. Not sure yet about any mobile sites.

Hi, just joined.
Ours is a 2016 X1 xLine 2.0d.
Found this thread when looking for info on 12v sockets for a dash cam.
Never knew about the socket under glove box, but it's there and is live with no ignition on but door open and keys in car.
Will have to try it with doors locked maybe to see if it stays on or goes off after X minutes.
Will report back...

It should go to sleep with the rest of the car a little while after locking.

On my Porsche 981 the sockets sleep after around 30 minutes, allegedly sooner or later depending on battery charge. Is the F48 similar or does it work on an exact time period?

Thanks.

Havent timed the F48 socket yet, but on other BMW's its a couple minutes and linked to other systems going to sleep.

You will see thins like the Auto shifter position lights or start/stop lights go out when the car goes to sleep.
On the F48 this is seen just a couple minutes after locking. Definitely less than 5 min

Tested both the F48 and 981 this evening. Both phone charger lights stayed on when the cars were locked and I hung around for a couple of minutes but both went out within 10 minutes when I went back to look.

Son of a gun! My 2017 X1-28i (US version) has it too and it's live! Thanks for the 'heads up'. Our owners manual doesn't mention it either.

Great find, amazed to find it on my 2016 F30 320d too. Here's hoping it's on my 2018 X1 that's on order too ?
