Where's the larger engine?!

Tried searching - where and when are we (U.S.) getting a larger engine in the X1? Just curious tried searching around... I know there was a bigger engine in the last model...

I'm not sure that there will be a larger engine, the X1 uses the same platform as the new Mini and 2 Series. Therefore the engine is mounted transversely, so not sure anything bigger than a four cylinder engine will fit in there. The 28i is the largest petrol engine available atm, although we only get the 20i in the UK. I guess they could look at a triple turbo four cylinder unit but BMW don't produce one that I'm aware atm.

Mercedes gets 375 HP (380 PS) in the GLA45 using the same 2.0 L 4-cyl displacement as used in the BMW B48 2L 4-cyl engine.

It's probably just a matter of time before BMW boosts the turbo output of the B48 engine to compete with MB. However, nobody outside of BMW knows when (or if) this will happen. There's money to be made, so I suspect BMW will do it this year or next.

In the meantime, both Burger Tuning and Dinan are working on aftermarket chip upgrades that will boost the existing B48 engine output (Burger already has one in beta for the B48 used in the Mini), although it will probably only increase roughly 40 HP / 40 lb-ft.

I'm not saying we won't get a more powerful engine, I just don't think we'll get a larger capacity engine. So far BMW have only offered performance variants with 6 cylinder engines in smaller vehicles, however I think that strategy may change with the move to FWD layouts for these smaller vehicles....

It would've been great if the M2 had a high power 4cyl to save weight, and that 4cyl found its way into the X1

I do wonder if that drivetrains in these FWD based cars is able to handle more power. It's not like Mini has high powered vehicles either. Maybe this really is all that we're going to go

170kw is not bad for a light SUV. If you're after a sports car, or hot hatch, maybe you want to look at something else. I looked at both the GLA 45AMG and the Audi RSQ3, and came away wondering what their point was; I still wonder!

I totally get the point of AWD ~3500lb / ~375hp GLA45.. It's like an EVO/STI with a better badge!

Maybe the GLA45 only makes sense in the US and countries that don't have the A-Class, because I don't see any reason why anyone would buy a GLA45 over the better looking, lower, lighter AMG A45 hatch.

Don't you get the A Class at all or just not the A45?

That's just crazy! Don't Mercedes like you guys across the Atlantic, the GLA is their worst product imo
