Nav system update (what a rip off)

$399.00 "WHAT A RIP OFF!"
I have just received the latest 'SPECIAL' from my BMW dealer, letting me know that I can update my Pro-Nav maps for the 'special' price of just A$399.00. In Australia, it does not even come with speed / radar or congestion warning.

You can buy the best model Garmin or TomTom that comes with all the bells and whistles on it plus lifetime updates and still get change for that.
BMW must really think we are stupid. 'IT IS JUST A SOFTWARE UPDATE'
The real cost to produce the software and install it during a service would be less then $10.00 per vehicle. Even 'Kia' provides it owners free updates during the warrantee period.

Considering the cost to have Pro-Nav added in the first place (+1500.00) this should be provided as a freebie for the 6 year warranted life of the car.

I am so pissed off, I am now seriously considering moving to a different 'brand' of car for my next new car purchase.

Only free on purchases of a new 1er
If you already have a 1er they want A$399.00 to update it here

Hi
A friend of mine as sucessfully updated the maps.
Here is a post he had made, on a portuguese forum, explaining how to get the codes to activate the maps.
It is in portuguese, but you can use any translator.

I wouldn't just point the finger at BMW on this. All mfrs with proprietary systems do the same...some ask for much more (Audi used to be about $1k, from memory). It used to be the case the mfrs themselves were being reamed by the map copyright owners, but those guys are dinosaurs now, and the problem will disappear in a few years.

You've only just found out about it

But its been that way since the beginning. The old country by country discs used to cost €135.00 each and to tour Europe you needed UK, Benelux, France, Germany & S. Europe

The big issue for me is that I have to buy the version specific to Australia.
My gripe is that, not only is it expensive, but it only comes with very basic features when compared to the features offered by BMW in other countries and what other manufacturers offer on their versions here. I bought a VW Golf for my daughter around the same time as I bought mine. The Golf Sat Nav has all the bells and whistles on it with a life time of updates and I have hired BMs in a few other countries that all had far more features on their systems.

I'm with you man. I also inquired recently about the cost and was told the same thing. My previous car - Golf VI - was also HDD based navigation and they dealer would just update it for free.

I also have the Nav pro and you're right - our features here in Oz are very limited - no connected drive, apps etc. That being said I was aware of the limited functionality when I bought the car.

The newer models do have some connected drive functionality:

I've decided to wait it out until I change cars next year.

NZ has only one "find my car" on connect drive.

This reminds me I need to have a word to my dealer... There is a fairly major new freeway on the Mornington Peninsula here in Victoria which was opened in Jan 2013. My August 2013 nav doesn't even have it on there! I think that is pretty ordinary.
