Rust on seat base
There are reports of wide spread of rust under the front seat frame on F20 in China and Hong Kong.
A number of F20s are affected, including 2011 made and 2012 made F20. The parts affected is part 1 in the diagram: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...57&hg=52&fg=10 |

omg that doesn't look good. I'll have a look on mine. I was actually looking under the seat the other day searching for a lost item. Think I should have noticed if it looked like that.

F20 owners around the world, please check under your seatframe!
It's a very serious issue here in hong kong and china. Most of the 2012 production cars have this problem. Rust will weaken the seat frame structure prematurely, essentially becomes hazardous when stress is applied to it. ( for example in an accident). Hopefully BMW will have a recall bulletin on this for a replacement soon. |

Called a dealer today (not the one I purchased the car from) and spoke to them about it; they didn't seem remotely worried or surprised.
It's booked in for the 5th October (earliest they could get it in with a hire car which costs £15).. Would be good to hear from other people on how they get on! Will |

F20 125i, built on march 31th (Regensburg plant). I checked my car and the rust is already here on both driver and passenger front seats !!! This is really a shame for BMW . This rust should appears very easily. My car is day and night in a closed garage. I live in Paris area (mostly dry and not so hot weather).
I don't think that this issue is that important. Do anyone knows if a similar defect has been observed on the F30 model ? sl91

Well, it seems that this issue affects not only the F20, maybe all BMW production. I hope that some officials from BMW reads this forum. Here is my opinion:
As everyone knows, the quality of a car is directly related to the quality of its parts provided by other companies. When one buys a BMW, one supposes that these part are from premium quality. That is why he accepts to pay more than 30 thousands euros. I will try to resume the main issues found on the F20: 1- Rear shockabsorbers rattling (I did not face this problem): Reason: Badly designed parts made in Poland 2- Air conditioning malfunction Reason: (may be ?) Compressor are not of Japanese made by Denso...I am not concerned, I have the Denso compressor. 3-Rust appearing on seat and maybe more. Reason: (may be) BMW buys cheaper steel from eastern europe countries. I don't think that the german #1 steel producer (Thyssen) makes such basic mistakes. Don't forget that ten years before, russian companies did not knew what is a galvanized steel. Of course, this is only my opinion but for me it is quite obvious that BMW is trying to lower as much as possible the car cost, saving 10 euros here and 5 euros there. This is really a very very bad policy for a premium car maker. This is the first time I bought a BMW. Maybe it will be the last. Of course BMW has very Brilliant engines but the other components must be also of very high quality. Before owning a BMW, I have always bought japanese cars made in Japan (not in the UK or Turkey), Mainly from Mazda and Toyota. I never have had any problem with these car, always 100% reliable, even at very large mileage. Best regards sl91
