Advice on getting a good deal
Morning all
I am looking to replace my stolen 2007 E81 118d SE with an F20. I cover approx 12,000 miles per year and my daily commute is 21 mile return and is 18 mile of fast A roads (60-80mph). My first hurdle is, I cannot decide what engine to go for (either 116i, 116d or 118d). I have not test drove any of these as I thought I would be in a much better position going into the showroom knowing exaclty what I want. I am also looking at getting the car on the current 4 year 4.9% PCP deal. How is best to approach the dealer? Cheers |

first- for 12,000 i would go for a petrol- second, i would go and test drive the cars you are interested in and get figures for all the models you are interested in and then walk away.

Figure out what the lowest you want to pay is and say you will buy the car now if they offer it. That's when the best deals start to come out, as they know they have got a potential sale there and then.
If you don't get what you want, walk away and say you are going to see what another dealer can do. Then ring them a couple of days later and say dealer x offered you within £10 a month of what you wanted. They'll either match it or better it, provided it was realisitic of course. To work out what is realisitc, i'd say 10% off the list price, but others might say you can do better. I can work out what that would come out at per month if you tell me the list price, deposit and trade in. If they have quoted you a GFV, that would be handy to know too. Oh and always close them, don't let them close you. I.e you be the one to say if you can do X, and throw in Y, then i'll shake your hand. Then you know you did the deal on your terms not theres.

Deposit would be my 2003 Focus which I paid £2k for in January so want at least £1500 part ex. I don't really want to add any cash to the deposit. F20 116i M Sport - £22,510 Metalic Paint - £515 Sun Protection - £290 Driver Comfort Pack - £500 Interior Comfort Pack - £360 Black Panel Display - £125 Auto Lights/Wipers - £90 Total (List) - £24,390 Would be grateful if you could work out some figures for me. I also want a service pack (£300) but would want this throwing in. Cheers |

How to...
1. Test drive the weakest motorisation that you think about to consider if it's ok for you
2. Go to configurator and fix your specs 3. with the specs done, contact 3 - 4 dealers in your area, personal contact is better and asked them for quote on your specs 4. if price difference will be really high, inform the others about the lowest quote 5. take decision for dealer, ask him for final quote... Remember, the cheapest dealer doesn't mean the best one, I would go for good ratio between price, knowledge and service basement. And it's always easier to negotiate some options you want instead of higher discount. If you would test the knowledge of your sales guy, ask him for some questions regarding BMW ConnectedDrive options |

I think I fell lucky with my deal, I have said on another post that if you get a deal your happy with go for it. Mind you might have something to do with me looking at an Audi A3 sport line as well

Ok, so assuming £1500 for your car, an apr of 4.9%, GFV of £9000 and 47 monthly payments.
Full Price = 47 x £362 6% discount = 47 x £328 10% discount = 47 x £305 The GFV is a bit of a guess, but every £500 more on will work out about £10 a month less on the monthly payments If you can get that for sub £300, I think you will have done well. Make sure you negotiate the price of the car first and talk about GAP insurance etc. later, other wise they will work it into the monthly figure and stuff you. In fact i'd say don't talk about gap at all, say you'll have a look for a quote online first to something to compare it with. Good luck.

I have a feeling that the GFV will be higher as Bowker BMW Preston are offering a bog standard 116i M Sport for £1k deposit and £295 per month with a balloon of £9270. If this is the case what would you expect the new monthly payment to be? A few weeks back I enquired about a 118d M Sport which had a list price of £25,870 (so £1475 more than the 116i I have specced) and they wanted my car plus £1.5k (£3k) deposit and then £299 per month with a GFV of £10k. I thought this deal was decent but seems it is all based on list price with no discount. I understand at least 7% is achievable. On this basis, I was hoping to get the 116i for £270-£280 per month with my part ex as the deposit. Is this achievable or m I barking up the wrong tree?

I didn't put any more than the minimum £289 deposit down on mine, I am actually getting cashback of about £1300 from the dealer on my 320i E92. I am going to be paying £302 for a 116i Sport with Driver pack added.
To be honest with the PCP I would rather have the money in my pocket rather than sitting with BMW on the car. Just my preference though. |

I'd guess a gtv of around 9700 then. £290 a month probably about 10% discount. Based on the deal u quoted there maybe more possible to get out of them.

If you're "just passing", about as far as you will get is getting a business card off one of the sales guys, and getting the 'headline' deals. You'll only get into talking about discount when you sit down with intent to buy the car. Otherwise they know you will just leave and use their figures as a negotiating tool with another dealer.
By all means pop in and register your interest, but i wouldnt expect to see them start throwing discounts at you.

Not too sure if I will bother going in now.
The problem is, the dealer isn't that local to me and its just by chance I will be going past there today. The other thing is that the 3 closest dealers to me are all part of the same group 'Cooper' and this one is 'Stratstone' so wouldn't have thought that the Cooper dealers can really 'better' each other. |

Sure they can, its down to the sales manager what discount they offer you.
Another tactic is to go in today and just speak to a sales man to get his card and a brouchure, let him take your details and make sure he knows you are a strong lead. Then ring him later do your negotiating by phone. Especially if you are along way from the dealership, saves you a trip later

They also make money flogging you things like GAP insurance, tyre and alloy insurance, service packages, paint protection etc. Sometimes the car is almost a loss lead to get you to buy outrageously over priced things.
