It looks surprisingly similar to the F20. In my opinion, the new car looks slightly better from the back, while the "old" car looks slightly better up front. Looks alone would not make me more or less likely to buy one. I am VERY skeptical about the front wheel drive, and curious about drivelines. Will there be something electric?

I'm a bit sceptical about the accuracy of those renders. The boot lid looks too small, for example.
It looks very good though! Like a lower X2, lets hope that the price is also (much) lower.

just poorly interpreted renders. it is a bit early for its debut. we haven't seen the G20 yet.
most probably the new 1 series will be fwd without the glorious ZF-8HP transmission. which means the car will be smaller, lighter and look-alike 2 series active tourer. all of these will reduce the manufacturing costs. However, the price that they reflect to end user will probably be more or less the same.

Why would it look like the 2AT which is a different segment and five years old by next summer? The F40, X1, X2 and 2AT/2GT all use the same platform, remember. I see a definite resemblance to the X2 in the spy pics.

I doubt that it will be smaller. Usually the new models are always slightly larger, unfortunately. I would have liked smaller and lighter.

I have a feeling that they will get lazy and try to match its looks with 1 series sedan which is being sold in asia. That design is more of a sedan version of 2AT rather than 1 series.
I mean have a look at the headlight design. Pretty much the same as 1 series sedan.

Yeah I agree that cars get larger, but ZF-8HP is the reason why F20 is a bit longer on the front. BMW does not prefer ZF transmission on their FWD cars.

There is a lot of controversy around the upcoming 1 series. I've read somewhere that the new 1 series will be a completely different segment (like mini or lets say audi a1), and the current 1 series will be moved to 2 series product line. All of these are rumours btw. Time will tell.

That and the longitudinal I6 in the M140i of course. Both of these are out so the F40 will definitely have a shorter hood. So my guess is the overall length will stay the same even if the internal space is larger. It should be able to drop a bit of weight too like the new 5 and 3 series.

Can't say I see a lot of similarities here though

I was trying to imply the similarity between 1 series sedan and spy photos of F40, excuse my mischosen words

yeah I definitely forgot about I6.
internal space needs to be larger this time in order for F40 to compete with its rivals. I've test driven the new Mercedes A-class. Material quality, build quality and workmanship in the inside is currently unmatched. but still lacks driving pleasure. I will be crying if BMW takes away the joy of driving small RWD cars from car lovers.
I'm struggling to develop "love" for sedans, but still not my cup of tea.

We will see. The sedan is not bad looking but rather conservative, I think the F40 needs a more sporty and youthful look to appeal to first time buyers.

No more RWD and no more L6 engine... That's really a shame

80% of 1-series owners think they are FWD.

Shame on THEM! That is no reason for BMW to make the new 1 series FWD.

I have just placed an order to replace my 120d company car...with...another 120d. Last of the RWDs. In 3-4 years, I will have to move up to a 3 series to avoid FWD.

BMW used to be quite good at explaining the superiority of rear wheel drive in their marketing. Now that they are actually selling front wheel drive cars, they can't do that anymore. That is why many BMW owners don't know that they have RWD.

maybe it'll be nice.....but it'll always be a FWD/AWD. for some reason it's better that now...but for some others (driving experience firstly).....isn't.

There's nothing better or different between this car and a common Focus, or A-class or A3....nothing. only standard, boring, common cars.

Looking at the new G20 3 series, it does not have a hand brake lever anymore, and so far no models available with petrol engine and clutch pedal. I guess the new 1 series could end up like that too? No longer a car for me.

I would be surprised if the low end models like 118i (and probably 320i) come with auto as standard.
The hand brake lever is certainly a thing of the past, all newer BMWs have electronic p-brake.

2 series has a manual parking brake. G20 318s/320s have manual 'boxes so pretty sure the 1s and 2GCs will have them too.

Honestly, if they screw up the rear/front lights design (again), I'm gonna start throwing stuff around But, it'll probably be a good looking car if they can simply enhance the current BMW 1 Series' looks and design. Eager to see what it looks like.
