I think back when the reactions were on the previous 5 e60 model.
Everybody was also acting like designers haha. I actually think it doenst look bad. Especially when you look at the latest movie of it. We will get used to it.

My opinion is the following. This generation of BMW 1 series will be a point of benchmark since it has new technologies which its competitors dont have.It is a car ahead of its time and people cant understand and see the proportions in it.In a few years time many many individuals will adore it and love it.

question: on the 118i, it makes peak horsepower at 4,400 rpm. What happens after that? Does it carry on flat with this turbo engine or fall off dramatically? If it falls off, this seems more like a diesel and why bother letting it rev to 7,000 shown in the tach?

Like the X1, I imagine that it may look better in person than in photos. That being said, if it were truly a good design, this wouldn't be necessary. It's kind of like someone telling you to marry an unattractive woman, as you'll get used to her looks eventually. To get people to part with the kind of money BMW asks for their cars, it needs to jump off of the page and make you want to buy it.
As for the hatchback and wagon haters here in the USA, you've been conditioned to think that these types of cars = cheap/ugly. Done right, they can really look better than their sedan counterparts and are much more practical. I saw an Audi S4 Avant in an Audi display near the Munich airport last month that looked fantastic compared to the dull S4 sedan sitting next to it. Ditto with the four-cylinder petrol and diesel versions. The BMW 2002 was a fun little car back in the day and a modern version would be welcome. Getting 40-50 miles per gallon in a fun to drive package at a reasonable cost seems right for the times. Not all BMW's have to be 6 or 8 cylinder M cars, as some people don't need this for their daily driver. Personally I'd like to see BMW bring four cylinder gas/diesel 1 series and 3 series hatch/wagon variants to the US, as the market might surprise them. My wife wouldn't mind an Audi A3 diesel, but I can't get past their poor reputation for longevity. How many 10-year-old Audis do you see on the road? Clean up the front/rear fascias on the new 1 series and give it a shot over here.

An ugly design is just that, unless you want to call it art and prop it up in a museum and debate the meaning of perception. No "in-person" viewing is going to change my mind about how ugly that front end is. Different yes, sporty NO! BMW is way off the mark here. Whoever designed this model should be transferred to Mini division since they already screwed up that design. BMW fans want a car that not only handles incredible but looks appealing, not questionable at best. So while I am not a car designer, I know what appeals to me and so do the rest of the BMW fans. Everyone has the right to their opinion, including you. This new "forward" design is off the mark for the potential buyers and market. If BMW wants to be a trend setter they need to make appealing designs not polarizing designs. Attracting and retaining buyers to your brand is the idea, right?

They barely show the front end in the video.
The headlight design has a definite square influence in overall shape and the included ring design. The angle of upper led strip where it meets the bumper is out of place on a fluid design. Net effect of the new model is "soft" and quirky. I'm sure the sedan will feature a much different front end to differentiate it from the new 1 series. Just an opinion, but I think the current designers and bosses at BMW are trying too hard to be different and have adopted a poor styling direction. Different does not have to be disappointing. |

The more I look at it, the more it is starting to grow on me. However, I think the grilles are way TOO BIG though. At first glance it almost looks like an SUV in the front (not sporty in my opinion). I think if they squish down the front end, making it thinner along with thinner headlights like others have said already, it would make it really aggressive and sporty. I could see them going that direction possibly with the coupe??? Just my two cents.

No one is claiming to be a designer. People are simply stating their opinion on this car, and the majority don't like it. That's that. It'll be interesting to see how well it sells.
I personally love hatchbacks, and am really looking forward to the Golf R. I dislike the rear more than I dislike the front. I am, however, looking forward to the coupe version with m-sport. |

More variants are expected to debut later, probably with the F21 3-door hatchback.

The 135i replacement will be with the 3dr in early 2012.
We will also get the 128i and the 125/130d.

Does this mean that the 135i replacement engine will be used in 3dr hatch too? sounds like a pimped out n20b20 (128i+70hp) to me.
no straight-6 anymore, not even in the coupe? |

125d will be the top 1er diesel. But once the F30 comes to the market , BMW will offer a 130d but this is about eighteen months away.
The F30 3er gets the Diesel 330d first before it is added to the 1er. Yes 135i will be introduced in the 3dr hatch but will also be available in 5dr format for the first time alongside the 3dr. When BMW were testing 135i prototypes - they used 3dr Hatches before the final Coupe bodyshell.

130d / 135i to be used in 3dr / 5dr / coupe / convertible equally?
since the f20s front overhang has clearly grown compared to its predecessor, i hope there is enough engine bay space to fit in straight-6 engines. |
