Check the battery. A weak one can cause all sorts of errors, although not usually misifiring.
I would expect it to be still on the original batterry, so after 7+years, probably due for one anyway and would be my first step. When I bought my 85k mile 2014 116i 6months ago the tailpipe looked liked a 1990 diesel's, the average mpg was 34 and it pulled too well below 1500rpm. So basically massively too rich, no significant misfiring but misfire fault codes were present. I changed the O2 and MAF sensors, cleared the codes and let it relearn the new sensors. I also changed the plugs as the Bosch ones had a massive gap. Very quickly the mpg improved and the average now is 44, runs smoothly and tailpipe is clean. Checked battery with a certified BMW batter reader / charger, all good health according to the monitor. Going to have to just bite the bullet and get sent in to BMW and have my pants pulled down for repairs as 2 local garages don’t know what’s wrong.

It's not exactly about battery's health (which is under control by the on board computer in this car), it's about the contact(s). The previous generation of the 1 Series had an infamous issue (recognized by BMW) of battery connection (unreliable over time, rust-prone) to the car's "front end" where everything happened. But no, not misfiring - this should be something else.

When I was changing the plugs and fitting upgraded coil packs to my 116i, i noticed that the wiring to the coils looked fragile and one had broken insulation.
There wasn't much slack on the wiring so getting the connectors off puts a strain on it. After I fitted the coils, the engine ran on 3 cylinders until i reseated the connectors. So try disconnecting the connectors and refitting them and carefully inspect the wiring close to them. I've not had any misfires or rough running since. |

I tried unplugging and reconnecting each coil pack with the engine running and when each one was unplugged in ran on 3 cylinders but returned to 4 when reconnected, misfire was still there though. Can't really notice it on tickover, worse when throttle applied. Not quite a running on 3 cylinder type of misfire but still making it undrivable |
