Upgrading M140i/M240i to Akebono Ceramic Pads

Upgrading to ceramic pads on a BMW M140i/M240i is reasonably straightforward:
  1. Loosen the brake fluid cap.
  2. Use a tool for the BMW lifting points to save damage.
  3. Use a 1/8" x 8" punch to drive out the guides holding the anti-rattle springs and pads in place. Replace these if older than 40,000 kms.
  4. Use moly pad goo on the backs of the pads where the pistons come into contact.
  5. Replace the brake pad sensors on the left front and right back. These come with the Akebono kits (Front: EUR1880; Rear EUR1656 for M140i/M240i). Check realoem.com for your BMW model using the VIN.
  6. Use a torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts (140Nm).
  7. Reset iDrive brake wear indicators by:
    a) pressing start button, no foot on brake;
    b) wait for Service reminder to disappear;
    c) press and hold the odometer button until you can see that values can change, and press until each of Front and Rear Brake values can be changed - it will show 'Reset possible' and will change to 'Reset?';
    d) press and hold until you see the resetting progress bar running and finish;
    e) press engine start button to close the process.
  8. Bed in your new ceramic pads by some low and high speed stops, but not to a dead stop. Start with 60 kph, then work your way up to 100 kph. It will take some 500 Kms to fully bed the new pads in.
Comment: Step 7 is a necessary step as after reset the front indicator on my low kms M140i went from 70,000 kms to 90,000 kms. The rears changed by almost the same variance.
