Semiconductors require lasers. Lasers require neon gas. Who controls 50% of global supply and the highest quality neon gas? Yeah this "chip shortage" won't be ending any time soon.

Not sure why it's taken 4 and a half months for this to be brought up but:

- This started commencing with builds from week 1 of 2022 (January)
- any effected cars have 6P1 option code
- most new builds now are having the option code removed

A few others are correct - it's purely a different Bluetooth/Wi-Fi chip in the headunit, and the drivers weren't complete for it.

Any cars with an istep of 22-03-546 or higher have the necessary Wi-Fi drivers
For CarPlay/Aa to be activated, they need online provisioning in connected drive. This is commencing may 19th for the affected vehicles

I mostly hate the shite music quality when playing via CarPlay Spotify. Thankfully, I've found a way to have both Waze in carplay and native iDrive Spotify work in unison.

My G80 arrived without carplay in march this year. It's very frustrating, I didn't even get an update during the build this was missing.

I've been for my runin services and the Dealers don't know anything about it and dot see that it's a big issue. 😡

This update can't come quick enough.

I have 6WD - WiFi Hotspot with comp 3 Month... in my build. Is this using the same wifi chip for Android Auto? My Garage is still showing I have this. Does it mean I'm safe?

If you don't have 6P1 as well, then yes.

But even if you do have 6P1, Wi-Fi is back as of last week anyway ( I have it activated in my week 2 build )

Am I the only one not understanding how the chip shortage is allowing a car to still have the hardware but software feature to be missing?

Download moar ram?

It's a different hardware revision of the MGU Headunit.

Put it this way, lets take the iPhone - there's actually a few different versions each year that look the same, but have a different 5G modem inside. some of the modems are made by Qualcomm, some by intel. although they provide similar features, they are different chips (see : https://www.macrumors.com/2017/12/01...er-than-intel/ )

This is what's happened in BMW's case - they couldn't get supply of the chip they were using (i'm unsure on the manufacturer), so they swapped out that wifi chip for a "comparable" one from another supplier. Hardware wise , this is pretty simple to do, but it will mean that the idrive software doesn't have the neccessary drivers in it to support the chip.

BMW's software schedule is actually quite laggy, so it has taken a few months for the drivers to go through this process
- Scope out neccessary software changes
- Plan in changes into development schedule around other things that need doing (ie i4/ix/new 7 series software launches)
- Write the software
- Test the software
- Deploy the software ( Happened as part of 22-03-546 at the end of april).

Hope this helps as to why the delay!

Disappointing.

But why are people even accepting cars that are missing features they specified in their orders? Or did they start putting clauses in there upon ordering?

For me, it was fine because it's temporary for a few months, and there's nothing really that carplay can do that i can't with the idrive system.

Yeah, the maps aren't quite as accurate but they've been fine, and the bluetooth intergration has been pretty easy to use as well.

I do miss the lossless audio from apple music, but that's it really. It certainly wasnt something that i would reject the car for, as i didn't buy it for the multi media, i bought it for the engine !

Agreed. Anything missing, drill the front bumper or attach those stupid dealer badges and they can keep the damn car.

That's on one model that I have know of and it's not $60k (Q3 base model) and was for a very limited time and only on dealer ordered vehicles (no customer orders). Audi has been very good with the majority of customer ordered vehicles. Wireless charger and temporarily one missing key fob. For dealer ordered vehicles, they have been removing the optional safety suite items.

Prices have gone up by 20 per cent here in Australia. It will be really sad if these prices become permanent.

I guess it's a personal preference thing because I completely disagree. It only takes one press of a button to switch between iDrive and ACP, it's really not a hassle. Also, you don't have to use Apple Maps with ACP, you can use Waze, google maps, or whatever navigation app you like best. In my experience, google maps is far more useful and accurate than the navigation system that's built into the car.

I sincerely hope nobody rewards BMW by paying ludicrous prices for crippled vehicles. Also got a chuckle at Mini blaming the chip shortage for dropping manual transmissions. COVID is the universal excuse for crap customer service and failure to plan adequately.

I wonder how long the chip shortage needs to go on (another 2 years? More?) before we finally figure out there is plenty of market availability here in North America and finally use some subsidies to kick start those factories here.

I agree. The difference between the rest of the available screens and CarPlay is stunning, in a negative sense. It does look like a kids toy.

The chip shortage that ravaged the auto industry last year continues to terrorize vehicle production in 2022. BMW switched chip suppliers to keep production rolling, but the new semiconductors weren’t fully functional, lacking Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These made their way into new vehicles, but owners will receive an update with the features.

BMW told Automotive News Europe that it would install the software features via an over-the-air update by the end of June. The chips also lack wi-fi capability. According to the publication, BMW didn’t specify the number of affected models or disclose where they were shipped. However, ANE discovered owners on forums from the US, France, Italy, and more with cars lacking the infotainment tech.

This isn’t new territory for BMW. In November of last year, the chip shortage forced the company to drop touchscreen functionality in models like the 3 Series, 4 Series, Z4, and several crossovers. It’s just not touchscreens and tech that are being affected, either. Earlier this week, Mini announced that it would stop building models with manual gearboxes because it simplifies its lineup with the ongoing semiconductor shortage and supply chain issues.

It’s unclear when the chip shortage and supply chain issues will resolve themselves. In September, BMW and Mercedes predicted that the chip shortage could last until 2023 or later. The disruption has driven up new car prices, and the pair might not be eager to lower them once chip supplies normalize. But that doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon.

Since March alone, Genesis, Ford, and Volkswagen have all cut features from certain models, while Chevy and GMC had to idle production. The chip shortage has also delayed new vehicle launches, like the Alfa Romeo Tonale, and not even supercars have been immune. McLaren had to postpone the Artura because of the shortage.

BMW says that affected customers will have their software updated by the end of June at the latest. While not having the technology could be a bummer, it is nice that BMW can simply perform an over-the-air update to add in the missing functionality.

Hmm. Weird. When I picked up my 22' G80 in April mine had. Wonder how they decide what gets what

They did. In Switzerland for example, the contract states that both delivery and wait times are subject to change, as well as the equipment of the car.

So if they run out of Laser lights and you get the adaptive LEDs instead, you have no legal recourse and you're stuck with the car.

I agree I have it in my 20, don't use it, I find it inferior to bmw's interface.

As long as they ship the cars with engines and tires to the customers…all is good O guess

I would cancel my order if I don't get the stuff that I want or not being asked if it's ok for me…
I don't mean Carplay stuff u get over the air, but other stuff they are removing or not offering anymore.

We're not talking about things that cost 1 or 2k here…the cutting of options is getting ridiculous, so if u order a car is like playing lottery nowadays :
