A few more gremlins seem to be creeping into my car at the moment! Coolant loss a few weeks ago and now a rattling noise on a cold start!
What do you guys think it might be? I've video'd the noise and it's on the link below. The rattle starts at about 15 secs in and last few a second or so and then goes away. In addition to is I've got another metallic rattling noise after a long motorway run. There is metallic rattling between 3200-3500 rpms. It also happen when de-accelerating. This is most noticeable after pulling off the motorway after a long run and then onto normal A and B roads. There isn't any rattling as such before and after that rev range. Thanks for your helps folks. Cheers, Pete |

I can't actually hear anything either . Engine sounds rough usually during cold start until for a minute or two until parts warm up.
Mine makes similar noise with a ticking noise as I think the valve are not fully lubricated during a cold startup until oil spreads all around the engine component. What octane fuel are you using? |

Sorry guys I've not made myself very clear. The noise in the video is a "grrrr" (for want of a better word) and starts at the 14 sec mark in the video to about 17 secs.

I still don't hear any other sounds between 14 and 17 seconds than after 17 seconds. Maybe it could be the A/C compressor running?

This is the third time I have tired to post on this. IOS app is being annoying today.
Anyway, my car makes exactly the same noise at start up. And it's sounds horrible when cold. And I particularly like the noise from the heat shields rattling around the exhaust. However, seems quite common and I am not to worries about it. Just not quite as premium as I would expect from BMW. I can't comment on the other noises you have. The 1 series 4 cylinder engines as are a bit toneless. Again, I can only comment on the 1.6, I would hope the 2.0L sounds a bit better. |

I'm with ovekvam, to me that sounds like the first precharge of the A/C system from a cold start.

An update on this. The noise started to get much louder on a cold start & then it developed a loud rattling at approx 3500 revs. I dropped it into the dealer last Friday and it was diagnosed as a fault with the actuator on the turbo - requiring a replacement turbo. I've got the car back this morning & all is well. The turbo was on back order for nearly a week, so it sounds like they have been replacing a few.

I have the same issue, and its pretty annoying.
Here is my car on cold start: They already changed the turbo, but didn't get much better

This is exactly the same noise my car makes. BMW reckon this is normal. I don't see how this is normal at all! In fact I think they are trying to avoid a big warranty recall now! It all over the forum and it's not what I expect from BMW. Thank you for posting the video. D |

Me too, some mornings it sounds absolutely awful! I spoke to the dealer about it a while back and the technician said it sounds normal. I'm not convinced though!:

The noise from my car at cold start is really bad now. Sick of talking to the dealer about it and being told it's normal. What a load of crap, I have never owned a car that makes this sound at cold start.
Still, what did BMW expect! It's a PSA engine at the end of the day. Very under impressed, only 9 months to go and I can get rid. |

So to be clear, PSA block, right, get it. So if the rest is BMW. Good show on them! I mean we all paid good money for a car that sounds like a 25 year old Ford Escort. Indeed, we should applauded BMW at their abilities and bow to engineering such as this. What a load of sh1t. Sick and tired of being fobbed off again and again by BMW dealers. Had the same crap with my 3 series. My wife had a small issue with her Audi A1, dealership could not do enough to help her. Bent over backwards to make her happy. So unimpressed with BMW that word escape me. Apologies for my rant. Feel a little better now. D |

Same noise/sound in our 116i as well. It's the same in the 316i, I guess that's just how they are. The difference between this and the x20i (N20) is remarkable.

I had to chuckle when I saw this...
My 118i made exactly the same noise, my brother and old man (both also car nuts) used to endlessly tease me about my diesel BMW when starting it around them. I traded the F20 in for an X3 2.0i in January. Guess what? The N20 mill in the F25 is just as noisy at cold start, the noise is just lower frequency and maybe even slightly louder. It's BMW's direct injection signature noise, there's no getting around it. My X3 is actually even more diesel-sounding once it's warmed up, I've gotten so used to it that it doesn't bother me anymore. |

sound is normal.. comes from the gap at the pressure regulator lever, gap is needed, lever is out of metal, when the Turbo warms up ( 15-20 secs) the Gap is almost gone then...

Here is Turkish guy that replied on my YouTube video, creating a DIY to fix this problem:
To do this job, you need dismount the heat shield. To remove the heat shield, you need to detach the lambda sensor. He attached a spring that I guess forces the valve to open less.. ?
