Best tire/wheel combo for a fun daily driver
Hi all! Just got my self a 2015 116i with m-sport package. Great little car, but I cant help my self to laugh at the 245 section rear tires... It has 136hp for gods sake. And since its in need off new summer tires for next season I´m thinking of going with something lighter and more economical. I´ve tried looking at forums, where I find that people like to run 245 squared, but thats mostly for trackdays, which i won´t use this car for.
Should I go for a squared setup or staggered? I´d most probably go with 17" wheels. Is any one running 205, 215 or 225 squared? 225 in the rear and 215 fronts? Problems with understeer with narrow front tires? Loved the chassi balance I had in my Mk8 Fiesta ST, 205 squared, but off cource thats a completely different layout. I like my cars playful but not unstable. |

Spend your money on a remap first.
You will have noticed how it goes flat by 4000tpm and there's no point in revving it higher. That changes big time with a remap. I used the MHD app, stage 1 map and their wifi obd interface on my 2014 116i Sport. https://mhdtuning.com/ Now I have up to 200bhp and 45+mpg. It was 136 and now pleasingly quick. It keeps pulling and pulling to over 6500rpm and the boost pressure has risen from a lowly 10psi to 17psi. If it still has runflats, get rid asap. I have the original size Eagle F1s and there is no problem with understeer or rear grip (on damp roads of course, you can slide the rear should you wish to.) It rode and handled poorly with run flat Potenzas. |

Mine had quite high mileage of 85k miles so I also changed the maf and pre cat O2 sensor because the tailpipe was very sooty - looked like a 1990 Transit's and mpg was poor. I did also change the rear silencer on the assumption that it would be clogged with soot so the aftermarket one probably also helps the performance. |

All from the same big enthusiast. What about just cheaper models like not M-Sport package (were 114 no power models)? I guess mine manages to have some wheel spin in the 3rd gear even with the wider rear tires.

18" are sportier: lower profile, firmer. Yet, less comfortable and more damage prone on faulty surfaces. 205 are available on 17" only (Y spoke 380 style). Narrow tyres are good on slippery surfaces (winter) and are more economical (less rolling and aerodynamic resistance, cheaper).
