Back in the 90's when I was a kid, BMW had some really beautiful cars on the road like the e34 and the e39. These two cars made me a die hard BMW fan. I loved the way they looked and they made me dream of the day when I would own a BMW. I had posters of these cars in my room and it wasn't because they were engineered especially well, it was all about the design. A well built car is not what comes to mind when you feel passionate about cars. Toyota have best built cars in the world and they will last for a lifetime, nothing you can say about a bimmer, that doesn't make us enthusiastic about toyota, does it?
I feel sad for kids who will grow up to recent BMW design.
When I was 12years, I already understood the R/FWD advantages and the 50/50% distribution. I also saw, like everybody else, that BMW had (much) stronger engines and outran in almost all tests its competition. When you had the occasion to sit in it as a youngster you'd notice the ergonomics was centered around the driver. Together with the design, it converted me to the enthousiast I became.

No, people who dislike it, are not toxic haters. Toxic haters are.

BMW didn't have much stronger engines than its competitors in 90s. They're in a better place now than they were in the 90s relative to competition.

Then why is the g80 grills still universally thought to be bad to this day

I can see die hard bmw customers coming around after a period of de-sensitization. Though, the fact that such a de-sensitization period is required says volumes about the real agenda here... are they making cars for drivers or are they pushing something on the ppl that no one really wants.. (kind of like EVs)

But ask non bmw car people and see what they think about the g80 grills
First, EV's are the future; the end.

Second, the M3, M4 grills are selling….becoming more accepted clearly. People are getting past that and into the actual performance of the vehicles. I didn't like them at first but I can see how one can simply put a euro plate on that front and be happy. So….yeah.

Well thats the problem right there isnt it. No amount of whining and moaning is going the fix the problem

It seems theres a malfunction in the head circuitboard, it needs to be ripped out and thrown in the dumpster and replaced by a new more capable, powerful one.

Maybe you refer to the observation that nobody goes up to 750hp/1000Nm now with this car. But that's not relevant. Also skoda can have a 1000hp engine when they want these days.

I compare the like for like engines. BMW has always set the bar the competition only recently can level. e.g. the B58, most probably the most iconic BMW engine now, and it's predecessors always defined the standard to beat. Most of BMW engines did and even more back then.

So with their new design direction i think BMW should probably change their slogan from "the ultimate driving machine" to "dont worry it looks better in person"…

We can just skip reasoning with the designers at this point. Can we schedule an intervention with the board of directors? They are the culprits that approved this bullshit.
And the Toyota is the one with the Hofmeister kink. BMW is done. It's been fun.

I like this car. It's interesting and is not afraid to be different. I do hope there are more… conventional… interior choices for the backseat.

Also, I don't think bmw ruled out making a supercar just by making a flagship SUV. Who knows…

I agree. Some of those designs were cool for their era, but would easily be looked over next to today's offerings. Heck, I wouldn't even want to drive any of those except maybe a select ZCP E46 M3 (…and that's solely because I have a romantic attachment to my old '05 IB ZCP M3; I wish I still had it), and it couldn't be my only car. Tech has just come way too far.

Ofc Bangles design was controversial but at least they (mostly) had hofmeister kink and normal size kidney grilles. Also those Bangle-era cars have aged really nice and many of them still look modern

However, the wife is from Iran and she likes the X4, X6, G80 and this new XM. She gets excited whenever we see a Velar, X6 and other similar SUVs that I suspect the majority of people here would dislike.

We need to get a new car for her soon and I want to buy her a G31 540i or G21 340i. However all that she wants is an X3/4/5/6 and now THIS THING. Even though I don't understand this it seems that some people will just like this sort of thing as the newest and most unique thing out there.

FWIW she has a manual at the moment and is looking to get a Triumph Rocket 3 soon. She also loved getting the Lego Chiron as a present so it isn't that she isn't interested in cars at all but she likes these somewhat vulgar SUVs. I don't want her to ever find out what a Urus or DBX is but for the moment she wants an XM....I'll just buy her the Citroen
What's the saying about "happy wife"?

Well for sure not a car commercial, it is “sheer driving pleasure” not the “ultimate driving machine” I guess! it is official, Marketing is now 100% in charge at BMW.
