rasping or buzzing noise coming from new m135i
Hi Guys,
I recently noticed this weird noise when driving the car at low speed and revving up the engine a little bit. Its this weird rasping or buzzing noise that i thought was coming from the boot but turns out its coming from the outside of the car, maybe the exhaust? i filmed it both from inside the car with the boot open and from outside the car too. im taking it in to BMW next week but do any of you guys have any ideas as to what it could be? Last time I had this sort of issue it was traced back to a vibration from the wiper blades on the windscreen at speed.
Maybe change the blades or tape them down as an experiment?

Can you get it to do it when stationary?
Sounds like a heat shield or waste gate rattle to me. Last edited by creepy coupe; 05-23-2013 at 07:43 AM.. |

Hmm. That might make you feel like it's a gearbox issue?

I could be wrong, but it sounds very much like the noise that mine made until I unplugged the wiring connector from the 'active' exhaust tailpipe side & lo & behold no more noise.
Waiting on my dealer confirming I am right & what they are going to do about it. Last i heard was they need another M135i to compare the two cars side by side. So it takes seconds to unplug the connector & try it. Let me know how you get on. Cheers Colin |

its the electronic valve on the exhaust. The beep is when it open or closes depending on the rpm. In park you dont hear the sound of because it isnt active. Only in drive on mine.
The rasping must be the valve opening and closing depending on the rpm, so it must be rasping on something. |

Very disappointing for a car that's only 2 months old. Didn't expect this from BMW |

I had such a very annoying sound in my exhaust of my 1998 Volvo S40 T4. It was clearly a phenomon of resonance, since it popped up at certain (low) rpm's only.
They told me then it was the catalyst in the exhaust coming in contact with the outer shell or a piece of the catalyst substrate breaking off and getting somewhere in my exhaust. They never cured it. I hope it's not such an ugly bug they can't find! Since your car is brand new, insist them on getting it solved. I would be pissed when I had an M135i sounding like a trabant falling to pieces! I assume BMW will understand it's unacceptable. |

Not to worry

Any make of car will have a certain percentage of failures. Its what warranty is for. You just got unlucky but it could happen to anyone. As long as your dealer believes that BMW UK will cover the cost, which they undoubtedly will, it should only need 1 day to fix....once the part is ordered, assuming that is that it even needs a part. mine does the same. It's the valve in the exhaust that changes position at 20 kmh.
It is confirmed by my dealer that it is the valve. They've oiled it a bit and now I can barely notice it anymore, but it's still there. I've complained about it again, but they tell me it's normal and that you always will hear the valve. Doesn't sound normal to me. They will look into it again next time I bring my car in. Do other M135i owners have this issue? |

In my old Alpina B3s cabriolet this wasn't so much as a valve but a trap door that blocked off the passenger-side tail-pipe. Needed to be lubed otherwise the squeak from it was horrific!
Something about increasing back pressure at low revs said Sytners when I asked. All I knew was that it made one hell of a noise in stop-start traffic. God help you if the standard pipes suffer from this too.

Have a look underneath at the nearside tailpipe & you'll see the electrical wire that goes to the motor that sits on top of the tailpipe.
It's quick & easy enough to unplug the connector which you can then tuck out of the way & take the car for a drive to confirm or not that this is causing your noise. |

Turns out that a bolt in the flap that controls its motion was broken. It can't be repaired so they have to order a whole new exhaust from Germany which will take 2 weeks. I asked if they can just unplug it and they said they don't know what it will do to the car if they do. Something about emissions control and putting the car into limp mode? Sounds like they are just talking crap cos they have no idea. I might just unplug it and see how I go.
Thoughts? Does the flap perform a critical task or is it just noise control? Last edited by kab_m2; 05-27-2013 at 01:42 AM.. |

From what i know, the flap is just to reduce sound or drone. Some people remove it so its a bit lounder during the engine rev.
There is no harm in doing it, and certainly dont think it affects emissions. |

In my E36 323ti Compact, the flap was controlled by a vacuum hose. If I unplugged the hose, the flap was left open, making the car more noisy at low RPM.
