HBO Chernobyl Mini Series

Too lazy to search for the threads we've had about Chernobyl and Fukushima.

Anyways, I stumbled across this when channel surfing. It's actually really good. I wonder how much of the depictions are actual or fake to add drama. Just finished watching the second installment and the scene where the two Soviet officials were "asking" for volunteers to go under the compromised reactor to open water valves was pretty moving. Can't imagine what could be going through their heads knowing people are already dying from the radiation exposure and being told three people from your group would have to voluntarily go into super hot radiation zone...pretty much signing your death warrant.

If you haven't seen this yet, to me it's definitely worth the watch so far.

I agree, its been excellent and engaging. It is constructed as a historical docu-drama, and if you consider the opening scene, the series is a flashback presumably based on those tape recordings the Professor made before committing suicide. Its near impossible to research the facts independently as we’re talking soviet era communism in the 80s and not much info got out. I could not believe the points raised in the second episode basically noting they had 72hours to control the fire or the potential hell on earth that would have occurred. Im looking forward to next weeks episode.

Really good show so far. Super tense and scary in episode 2 watching those guys go into the water-filled reactor building and their flashlights start to go out, and when they're discussing the severity of the incident.

Lots of chatter here about the series.

I'm luvin' it so far. The depiction of the soviet bureaucracy seems spot on.

The estimations of how much bigger this catastrophe this could have been on a global scale was indeed frightening. And yes, how much actual facts could be pulled out of there during the Soviet era is definitely a factor. I wonder what Russian government officials think of this series so far.

Yeah, can't imagine the panic being in the dark with your dosimeter going nuts.

The human cost of Chernobyl is definitely worse than Fukushima. But in my opinion from a total environmental catastrophe, Fukushima is worse.

Thanks for the thread link. Haven't visited that thread and didn't know there was already a discussion going.

3 or 4 years ago, on a ski vacation to Telluride, I met the guy in charge of GE Japan, who was at the top of the chain of the disaster on the American side. We had a very interesting conversation.

I think you mentioned this to me via PM one time. I guess one benefit from Fukushima is the accelerated rate of robotics development.

Very well done mini-series, especially the attempt by Soviets to portray the “event” as a mere roof fire vs. explosion of the reactor core. Excellent acting, too, where the expressions of the actors is as telling as the dialogue.

I'd like to see if there is a making of series to get into the details of the information the creators of the series had. I'd also like to know how much support they got from the Russian government.

I look forward to the release of this film in Russian, so far we only had a trailer. I have already watched a lot of videos about Chernobyl and the consequences, it is really very interesting and fascinating!

Agree, especially on the second point. I presume the series is based on a combination of public knowledge + research. The sources of that research would be very interesting to know.

I too have seen quite a few videos on Chernobyl. But nothing to this level. It's as if I was watching my first video on Chernobyl. I don't speak Russian but there have been a fair amount of it in the series both with and without sub titles.

Found this about the three guys who went under the reactor to drain the water:

Apparently, 2 of the 3 are still alive and the one that isn't alive seemed to have passed due to cardiac issues. Interesting.

Yeah, I can't see how they survived being exposed to that much radiation. In the comments, someone professes to have met 2 of the 3. How true this is....well...it's the Internet.

What's not in dispute are the names of the 3 responsible for the heroic action.

From the second episode of the mini-series that showed the fire fighter's clothing being thrown into a pile, here is a video of the basement where the clothes were deposited and are still there many years later. Not sure when the video was shot, but the publish date of the video states 2017.

Wow. Thanks for posting! That video is even more intense after watching the show. Even the creepy background music adds to the drama towards the end of the video. Seriously, that is just remarkable to see. I just can’t imagine being there in person, with all the detectors and alarms going off.

i guess those 3 men were thinking about their families also at that time before making that action.. cause they were told that their families will be taken care by the government and back in soviet times its like an honor and at the same time it ll be a best thing to happen for those families.. im not sure they were firefighters i remember it more like night shift workers did that..

i have small video about the disaster that i post here earlier if you like to see..

Great show the wife and I are enjoying immensely. Amazing to think they could have been so cheap constructing the plant knowing the possibility of deadly consequences if an event occurred and how stupid the engineer who forced the test causing the explosion.

Many brave men lost their lives trying to mitigate the deaths of others. I remember watching the news at the time of the soldiers on the roof working as fast as possible to throw sand on the pile, most died horribly.
I never did hear the story of the three divers, brave doesn’t even come close enough. Got salute all those guys.
