The BMW 8 Series. E31.

Quote:
The BMW 8 Series was an entirely new class with V8 or V12 engines, built from 1989 to 1999. It was the most expensive BMW model of that time.

The BMW 8 Series included several inventions such as twelve cylinder engine or steering linked rear suspension. It had a very aerodynamic shape and was the first car with a drag coefficient of less than 0.3.

The 8 series is still pure sex.

I had a 92 850i. THE most problematic car EVER, but I still love it. It has a timeless design that looks modern to most, even today.

I'd love to pick up one, seriously. I feel like it's only a matter of time before they start going up in price. I want a black on black 850 with MT, and the ninja star rims.

What a head turner that would be. Unfortunately, no room, time or $ for extra project car.

When I was around 3 I had a toy version of this, a red one (850 I believe it was) My dad had an E36 320i back then so I knew what a BMW was but seeing this and realizing it was made by the same people really sparked my love for the company. Would love to have one, and one of the next gen 8 series if they make one! The E31 is automotive art

I suspect a neo-8 series to be a Gran Coupe. Coupe or convertible would be possible too of course, but I suspect that there are a vocal group of 7 Series customers or potential customers who want the more exotic coupe look but also want to maintain the status that the flagship model carries. This would also allow for a V12 GC.

This thing looks 100 times better than the new f32 as sad as that is. They did a sexier take on a coupe in early 80s than they can in 2013. With that said bringing this back will likely be another disappointment by bmw

The exaust from that V12 with steel pipes is sick!
There are alot of things that can go wrong with these cars, age and milage does not make it easier to own these cars.
And parts are fairly expensive.
But it is a classic, sadly i've never driven one, but it comes high on the list!
I think good maintained cars will increase their value significant, hopefully BMW should come with a sequal soonish!

By far my favorite rims on the 8er. Everyone and their moms have M-parallel's on everything IMO:

My uncles got the v12 8 series and it is extremely problematic especially with the electrical system but it is a beauty. And those are the rims he has!

recently sold my 1991 850 and though i loved it it cost me sooo much in maintenance issues i spent more on it in 3 years than it cost me,and i thought it was in great shape which it was.its just the upkeep that kills and i dont see them appreciating in value anytime soon

I've heard...an engine swap would really do wonders for that car.

Same here! Except my mom drove a 1992 E32 740iL. The 850CSi was my dream car back then.

Would love to get my hands on one of these. Maybe find a totaled Mclaren F1 and borrow the engine and create a one off Franken 860csi... or M8 if you will.

The idea of an upcoming 8 series would be amazing, but when i think about what it may look like based on the direction bmw is going in terms of style i may prefer for this project to be left alone for a few more years. Not feeling the i8 style... I would prefer a new 8 series to look as similar as possible to the old one

I owned a 1991 850 for three years. Yes, a real head turner and electronically well ahead of it's time.

BUT - let's be honest, it was a pig on curvy, bendy roads. It was too heavy for its suspension. Great in a straight line, but head into a turn too fast and you'd be sliding all over the place with lots of tire squealing and body roll. The 740i I bought subsequently was much better behaved.

It was also very heavy on gas too - I was lucky if I could get 16 mpg highway out of mine.

But I loved it anyway!

The 8 still looks so good on the road all these years later.
