116i MPG

Hi all

I am now contemplating ordering a 116i over a 118d as I only cover 12,000 miles per year and was wondering if anyone has any real life mpg figures?

BMW quote 49.6 but obiously this isn't going to be the case in real life.

Cheers

39.0 Average since purchased.

The journey computer reports between 36 worst and 46 best mpg on my work commute depending on traffic, but usually about 40 give or take 2.

Motorway you can expect 45 mpg.

Best figures come from 60 mph A roads which could push the 49 figure.

I should add i try to drive economically and use ECO PRO 90% of the time. With the otehr 10% being play time on b roads.

id say roughly 18-19 miles of my 21 mile commute are on fast A roads where you can average 60-80mph. I was hoping to achieve around 42 mpg.

On those roads i'd say that's possible, maybe more depending on traffic and your driving style.

i was originally going to go for a 118d but that's £1960 more expensive to buy so trying to work out whether or not I will save that over 4 years.

I usually travel at 70 max. Does the car have enough pull for quick overtakes?

@ 12,000, its a fine margin either way, i'd say just buy the car you prefer.

Yes, absolutely. In 3rd gear and sport mode, its pretty nippy. Not far off my old 120i.

Worked out that if I averaged 42mpg in the 116i and 53mpg in th 118d, the 116i would cost me nearly £1500 more in fuel (over 4 years/48000 miles) but that is still saving me £460 on the price of the car.

I just want some concrete mpg figures for the 116i before I bite the bullet.

Well what i get in MPGs can only be a guide, there are so many variables, traffic, type of road, hills, driving style, temperature etc.

However on a flat, traffic free 60 mile an hour a road at 10 degrees outsidse temp, i could confidently say i would average atleast 42 for that journey, and maybe hope to get 45 - 46.

My overall average is 39 though. Constantly coming to a stop in traffic is the MPG killer.

Have you factored in the difference in VED?

Tax on the 116i is £120 per year and the 118d is £30 per year therfore over 4 years (first year free) the 116i is going to cost £270 more to tax however I will still will be £190 up on the price of the car.

Wow this is close and all based on the car averaging 42mpg.

Although with petrol, the £1960 starts off in your bank account, rather than being put into a depreciating car.

How confident are you about getting 53mpg out of the 118d, it could do less (or more) which would further complicate things.

The diesel might hold its value better, so you would see more back at the other end.

There's also another unknown, which is the cost of diesel in comparison to petrol. What if diesel goes up to be 10-12p more per litre than pertrol? Likewise, what if they equal out.

At the end of the day, you can't be certain, so i'd say just pick the car you most want to drive.

I am very confident that the 118d will achieve at least 53mpg and I am purely basing this on what my last one achieved.

I would also expect the diesel to hold a higher residual than the petrol and have a feeling that there are going to be loads of 116i's around which might cause a problem.

Is it likely that the price gap between petrol and diesl is going to widen? The difference is currently 5p per litre where I live.

All I know is that I loved my 118d, it was quick, pulled well and was very economical. However, it would be good to get away from that diesel 'rattle' and if the 116i performs as well as the 118d and is economical as I hope then I think I could be swayed.

Read an article recently highlighting that the gap between petrol and diesel per litre is actually narrowing.

In summary over the period the two models in question will probably end up costing the same, so its all down to preference and whether wish to pay up front for the diesel model and saving on running costs or vice versa.

0-62 times 118d vs 116i

E87 118d: 8.9 seconds
F20 118d: 8.9 seconds
F20 116i: 8.5 seconds.

The 116i is quicker than your old car.

there's a website for 'honest john'
this compares actual mpg versus quoted mpg...well worth taking a look at. If you achieve 80% of the manufacturers' quoted then you're probably doing quite well.
The more of us that update the data, the better the accuracy will become.
