Guide to Photography

Hey Guys,

Really want to get working on my new DSLR Camera but I want to learn everything about it and pickup the fundamentals of photography before. Does anyone have any recommendations for good books?

i dont have any good books... but i know alot of good people / places you can check out ..... some of the decent ones are www.dpreview.com or www.dgrin.com which is run by smugmug .... or www.Nikoncafe.com i talk alot there and there are many people who are professionals there that can help you with whatever questions you have about learning or going up to the next level with your work ... !! If you need some advise or some just shoot me a PM or hit me up on the IM

I haven't read very many, but it would depend upon what you intend to photograph. Fore example, if you wanted to photograph landscapes, you can get some great information about the zone system from an Ansel Adams' book. I don't remember the title. His photography was on film, but much of it still applies to digital. It is applicable also to other than landscape shooting when you have time to setup your shot. It also gives you a better understanding of the way photography works.

Thanks for your responses. I will check them out. I was recommended the following two books:
The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby
The Digital SLR Guide: Beyond Point-and-Shoot Digital Photography by Jon Canfield

Check out Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson, its suppose to be a really helpful book. Check out Wikipedia as well, I've learned a lot of info about depth of field, exposure, and other things from there. Don't be discouraged to mess around with your camera and read your manual so you know what the buttons and settings do.

+1 to "Understanding exposure." Beyond that, it does depend on what sort of pictures you want to learn how to take. For example, if you're into nature/landscapes, I highly recommend any of John Shaw's books.

Another example would be to study the masters. I shoot a lot of black and white so my bookshelf, in addition to the "how-to" guides mentioned above, is filled with collections of coffee-table-style books featuring the work of folks like Robert Doisneau and Henri Cartier-Bresson.

One more recommendation on a Web site is the online community www.nikonians.org. Excellent place to learn technique, receive critiques, and ask technical questions specific to your gear.

Hope that helps!

Jason
