Trying to sift through this thread. My 2008 e91 (N52 with 6AT) has 347,261 miles. The wagon has been great with clean Blackstone oil reports, but beginning to look for something newer. Perhaps a PHEV?

I live in an area with temperature extremes, +100 during the summer and freezing mornings during the winter. I don’t drive in bumper to bumper traffic and annual mileage exceeds lease limitations. Did I mention I hate the tablet screens in the new BMWs? Pretty much talked myself out of an EV and will consider a preowned vehicle.

Plug in hybrids seem to be catching on much more that full EV's which have long term lithium battery life and fire risk at the forefront on more and more peoples minds.
PHEV's with a very small (and much safer) lithium battery to take you without engine for around 35 miles, and a seperate normal battery for engine running. The only thing I see here is if you should get critically low on gas then switch to your hopefully fully charged electric to get you by to find a gas station.

The number is per 100k cars sold.

I do think that an older vehicle is more likely to catch fire than a newer one and the average age of an EV on the road is far far lower than the average age of a gas car.

From October 2007 thru December 2021 I spent a lot of time and miles driving in Fairfax County. I can't recall seeing even one vehicle fire ever.

Looks like a Ford 500. Last built in 2007, so 17 years or older. The 500 was known to have an engine mount prone to fail and allow the engine to move around too much. Perhaps the 17+ year old fuel lines ruptured when the engine mount failed, causing the fire. So, a lack of maintenance issue, rather than an intrinic fuel instability issue.

I agree with this but it can't ignored even a new EV can catch fire very quickly for no reason, even before it's delivered to the customer.
