I don't get it, the M135i with a great I6, and the new 1M with a supposedly 4 banger?
Strange...
I know the E30 history is like this, and the M2 is something like the 2002tii once was, but coming from E87 1M with N55, and the F20 135iM inline 6, it seems to be a step back using a 4 banger in the new 1M/M2...

Love the idea... Let's get it going before another 5 years goes by.

Isn't this just the M2 Gran Coupe that we've been discussing for the last few months and Scott26 all but confirmed not too long ago?

A downsized yet practical sedan is significantly more interesting than the ever larger M3/F80

My guess would be that any M-affiliated vehicles on the UKL platform will be AWD X-Drive and all the regular vehicles on that platform will be FWD.

Ugh, if only it was RWD and avail in the US. I'd buy it asap. The render looks a lot like an S4. Looks like I'll have to wait for the 4 series to see how it looks

What's in a look
'I see the difference'
if you take a rear wheel drive 1er (M sport front) add a 'M' side vent and cut down the hatch back and turn it into a boot and add some flash wheels everyone loves it. The Estoril blue also helps it look fab

BMW, please take note.

M is for mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm tasty

The discussion at BMW is going into the pricing bracket direction.

1er sedan: front wheel drive:
- cheaper (long term; RWD is in short term the same, since BMW has big volume on RWD parts shared with 3er, and current 1er)
- it can be placed in a lower price segment (direct answer to Audi A3 sedan and Mercedes CLA)
- more roomy interior
FWD is easy to justify for a Golf form (current 3 and 5 door 1er), for a BMW sedan? brand image is at risk

2er Gran Coupe - the price segmentation becomes a mess of its own:
-the price must be higher than 2er Coupe = to close to 3er price
-the current 1er RWD is fixing the price of the 2er Coupe, this cannot be moved lower to make room for a normally priced 2 Gran Coupe
-RWD requires a longer car if you want to stuff 4 doors and have a decent interior length

Wow, that render...with just a minor change to the character line along the lower edge, the car completely loses the pot bellied pig look and becomes a really aggressive looking little beast.

You are wrong.

MB CLA ---> 2 Series Gran Coupe

Audi A3 Sedan ---> 1 Series Sedan

I agree with you about the pricing mess that this very granular segmentation is going to cause. The price deltas between all of these models is going to be in the hundreds of dollars in a lot of instances, I'm guessing.

As for the point that I bolded, this isn't going to factor into whether or not this car is the RWD M2 Gran Coupe or a so-called FWD 1-series sedan (which I don't see happening). BMW is already making a 2-series Gran Coupe, and making an M version doesn't have any impact on size at that point.
