Lightbulb Future BMW model information

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
This post contains information about future production plans I've compiled from various leaks within the BMW organization. It is continuously updated: new research is added, and everything that becomes official is deleted.

Before we proceed to the meat of the matter, a note from the sponsor:

https://portal.fscmap.com provides easy access to the detailed information about any BMW vehicle by its VIN number, including its production date and the complete list of options.

Earlier in 2018
  • Funny enough, F94 X7M was (is?) under consideration.
  • G26 4GC will keep the hatchback.
  • I20 iNext will have at least two performance levels.
  • EOP for F36 4GC has been moved to 06/21. This should be seen as evidence of the G26 4GC needing extra development time so it can become a more interesting (unusual?) car than its predecessor.
  • The initial release of i4 will have an 80kWh battery and the choice of a single or dual motor drivetrain.
  • G42 2er Coupe will be produced from 08/21 to 03/29 and will possibly be made primarily or entirely in Mexico.
November 2018
  • BMW i4 is not going to be built from the ground up as a BEV. Instead, it will be one of the versions of G26, similar to the recently introduced iX3, though hopefully with better performance. It will start as a RWD or AWD with 80kWh battery. If you want a clean sheet BEV, you'll have to wait for the I20. How closely the iNext concept reflects that future production car remains to be seen. Both i4 and I20 should be expected around 2021. In other words, I can confirm the AutoExpress report here: https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/10...stream-in-2021
  • G42 is confirmed to be built in Mexico.
  • G09 X8 exists outside car journos' dreams.
  • The same i4 BEV drivetrain could also find its way into the Chinese 3er LWB (G28). I'm not seeing it in a regular G20 yet.
January 2019
  • There's still no hint of an electric G20. It is highly probable that G26 will be the BEV model for the world and G28 - for China.
  • And that also means that G26 will be a true mix of 3GT and 4GC: long wheel base with a more streamlined hatchback body (which we've all just seen for the first time).
March 2019
  • Potential models for G42 could include 220i, 220d, 220d xDrive, 230i, 230i xDrive, M240i, and M240i xDrive.
  • The next 5 series range currently consists of G60 sedan, G61 touring, and G68 LWB.
  • The next generation RR Ghost EWB will include an all-electric version.
  • The next likely candidate for 48V is G01/G02.
  • First news about the next (G87) M2: production 12/2022-03/2029, likely in Mexico.
  • G01 X3 and G02 X4 will have their life extended to 10/24 and 06/25. It's possible Spartanburg will not be the primary production plant for their successors.
August 2019
  • G26 will be the platform for both regular 4GC and i4. Preliminary US lineup: 430i, 430i xDrive, M440i xDrive, i4 60 sDrive, i4 80 sDrive, i4 80 xDrive. Intro in 2021, both gas and electric version will likely be introduced simultaneously.
  • One more F87 M2 model is possible. Just looking at timing, it should be something very special, with a very short production run. And it will be US only.
  • The G83 will not offer as much choice, likely sticking to a single model.
September 2019
  • The next 8 cylinder M motor is going to be called S68. Most likely, it will be an evolution of S63, not something radically new. I would expect some electrification with the internal combustion side mostly staying the same.
  • The on-again off-again X1 M35i is on again.
  • The first M Performance PHEV vehicle is coming: M750Le xDrive.
  • BMW is planning to offer the largest battery among all BEVs on the market at 120kWh. It will go into the model that we haven't seen yet, and I'm not yet going to speculate on the car itself.
November 2019
  • It is possible F40/F44 will have a shortened lifecycle of 5 years without LCI (like we saw with the previous X5). As a total speculation, I wonder if this is because the current platform is not suitable for a proper BEV (the platform sibling Cooper SE is ridiculously weak sauce for 2019, while U06 and derivatives will hopefully be much better in that regard).
  • The likely market model name for iNext is simply "iX". The battery sizes are no longer used for model designation, instead we'll have "xDrive40", "xDrive50" and "M50 xDrive".
  • X8 is shaping up to be a halo high performance SUV, with M45e as the entry level model.
  • A note for nomenclature nerds: the mild-hybrid diesels are no longer designated "Bx7" but instead are called "XD5". 20d is XD5141O0, 40d is XD5151O0. The 5th position ("4" or "5") and the 7th position ("O" or "T") show which diesel engine is at the core of that drivetrain, so the former uses the B47O1, while the latter has B57T2 (TÜ levels are not carried over).
December 2019
  • Likely SOP for G09 X8 is July 2022.
February 2020
  • BMW still can't figure out how to call their future electric cars. The new solution: i430 and i440 for G26 BEV and i330L and i340L for G28 BEV (China only model).
  • G42 is known to include a bunch of pedestrian 4 cylinder models but now there's a much more interesting possible (very preliminary) addition: M245i.
  • Interesting new feature, first likely to appear on iNext: dynamic window and/or sunroof tint. This technology is courtesy of Continental, which calls it Intelligent Glass Control (google will give you details).
April 2020
  • Preliminary (likely incomplete) G70 lineup: 735d, 740i, 745e, M750e, i740, i750, i7 M60, with only 735d and i740 being RWD, all others AWD. Note that this is another proof of BMW rejecting the use of battery capacity in its EV model names.
June 2020
  • Live Cockpit will be standard on the U06 family (next gen FWD) cars. The recent spyshots with large screens and few physical buttons is the new direction.
  • The same U06 family will introduce the new collaboration with Sonos for car audio as the upgrade option.
  • G30 EOP moved forward from October to June 2023.
  • EOPs for all three 8 series models postponed until 06/25 (previously, G14 was scheduled to EOP in 06/24, G15 - 10/24, G16 - 02/25).
  • Added G22 EOP: 06/27.
July 2020
  • Currently confirmed G42 models for July 2021 launch: 220d (non-US), 230i, M240i xDrive. All engines and equipment are known from existing models. No trace of the M245i name anywhere yet.
  • I believe (this is not 100% certain) i430 will be 60kWh RWD and i440 will be 80kWh AWD.
August 2020
  • Some details about I20 (iNEXT). Production starts in July 2021. Two models are known at the moment. One will have 295hp, the other 430hp (potentially there could be three drivetrain versions but I only see two implemented right now). Both seem to be dual-motor. 20" to 22" wheels. Option choices will be at the level of X5 (2-axle air suspension, soft close doors, Sky Lounge headliner, B&W audio, etc). A notable new option is called "BMW Natural Interaction" - as usual, we should expect this to show up on all higher end BMWs at approximately the same time in 2021.
  • Added G42 220i to the list of initial launch models.
  • Model name change: i430 becomes i435.
  • (Trying to redeem myself for not being the first to report on G81): I can now confirm that BMW has no plans to offer a US version of G81. For the rest of us, expect it no earlier than G21 LCI in mid-2022.
  • A new version of G82 should show up in a couple of years or so. No information on what it is exactly yet.
  • For the US, the G23 M440i xDrive will be available from July 2021. The G22 M440i (RWD) will start production for most markets in March 2021, while the US version will again be delayed until July 2021. In other words, for American buyers, for MY2021 there will only be RWD M440i convertible and AWD M440i xDrive coupe while the AWD convertible and RWD coupe will be added for MY2022.
  • All xDrive M3s/M4s will start production in July 2021.
September 2020
  • The additional G82 M4 model mentioned above is likely the M4 CSL.
  • G60 lineup: heavy emphasis on BEV, with models like i530, i540 xDrive, i5 M50 xDrive. More models will be known later.
  • X8 has been renamed to XM. Same model lineup as previously known: a 45e hybrid and two different gas engines.
November 2020
  • The electric version of the next generation X1 (will be sold as "iX1") will be available in single-motor and dual-motor configurations with two range options. As a hint of motor power output, the designation for the single motor model will use "20" and the dual motor will use "30".
  • F44 production has been extended to 10/24.
  • G23 will be in production until 10/27.
  • LCI for G22/G23 is scheduled for 03/24.
  • G80/G82 production confirmed to end at the same time as G20/G22.
  • On a more general note, looking at all the information available to me I can't shake the feeling that we're at the end of active development of internal combustion engines, at least for mass market vehicles. There will of course be some advances and improvements but even the future generations of BMW vehicles (right now I'm looking specifically at the new transverse platform, the Minis and the 1-series) are going to use the same well known engines we see in various models today.
  • Addition (or a replacement for one of the listed models) to the G70 lineup I provided in April: i745.
  • The SOP of i4 will not be simultaneous with G26 ICE. i4 will start production in November 2021. Right now I can see only the RWD i440 (my initial guess of AWD for this model was incorrect) and the i4 M50 xDrive. The i440 seems to be pretty pedestrian: you will be able to configure it like a stripped down 420i or something like that, even 17" wheels (though maybe US will have 18" standard). The M50 looks like a proper M Performance model, with M bodywork, bigger brakes, adaptive suspension, rear spoiler, 18"-20" wheels, etc. i440 can be equipped with the same as an option. Basically, the main difference between the two models is the lack or presence of the front motor. In what is likely the biggest disappointment for this item, I can't get power numbers or battery capacities for these models.
  • Possible other US market G26 models, which we are not likely to see before 2022: 430ix, M440i (RWD), i435.
December 2020
  • First bits of info on the next-gen FWD platform cars. We start with U06, which is like F45 but more better (even more boring?). Production starts in November 2021. New iteration of gas engines (MÜ2). Infotainment/assist features on par with the higher end BMWs, LED headlights possibly standard. Known models: 218i - B38+auto, 155hp, 220i - B38+48V+auto, 155hp; 223i - B48+48V+DCT, 200hp, 218d - B47+DCT, 148hp. These cars are obviously not for the US.
February 2021
  • iX option details (obvious things not included):
    • Standard 20", optional four types 21" (three on the lower model) and two types 22".
    • Soft close doors
    • Thermal insulation for the windscreen
    • Sky Lounge roof
    • 4-zone A/C
    • Interior camera
    • New things that I only know names for "Personal CoPilot", "Natural Interaction".
    • HK audio standard, B&W optional.
    • Active Steering and 2-axle air suspension (late availability on the lower model, not unavailable like previously stated)
    • Fully Autonomous Driving (not on the lower model)
  • The top level iX (M whatever) will start production in 03/22. Besides differences in power (which I still don't have access to), it will have 21" wheels, Active Steering and air suspension as standard.
  • G20, G22, G23, ICE G26, and G42 will get a new interface/infotainment/communications package, including the dash we will first see in i4. G20 will get it for LCI in 07/22, G42 in 08/22, G22, G23, and G26 in 03/23. No other existing model seems to be slated for that interface.
  • Speaking of G26, its option details... just kidding - accounting for the just mentioned interface, if you know the option content of G22, you're good. Just add fake sounds for i4.
  • G70 7er (production dates in the main list at the top) steps up the luxury big time. Start with standard air suspension, soft close doors, B&W audio. But options is where the real action is.
    • Choice of M Sport or Luxury interior and exterior design
    • Fully automatic doors like in the new Phantom
    • Sky Lounge roof
    • Totally new headlights, with the same "Iconic Glow" designation as the stupid X6 grille. That grille will be available too of course.
    • Rear seats equal in comfort to the front ones (heating/ventilation, massaging) in Executive Lounge configuration, plus rear entertainment that's better than the old "shut up, here's an iPad screen in the headrest for you".
    • Same "Natural Interaction" thing as in iX.
    • Even more better version of B&W audio.
    • A new driver assist package called "Motorway assistant".
    • A whole bunch of BMW Individual customizations.
  • Display Key will be made available for more models, starting this fall.
  • M4 CSL is possible with SOP 07/22 and a very short production run.
  • All 8 series models will be upcontented in 03/22, with a bunch of things that are currently extra cost options becoming standard. This will include making M Sport standard on all 840i and 840d models and some new wheels. M850i will gain a new "M Performance" option so there will still be something to distinguish it from the lower models. This is possibly the closest to an LCI these cars will get.
March 2021
  • The most finaliest final model names for i4: i435 becomes i4 eDrive35, i440 becomes i4 eDrive40, and i4 M50 xDrive becomes simply i4 M50.
  • And the same for iX: iX xDrive40, iX xDrive50, and iX M60 (so, not a full M car).
  • Competition models (as opposed to Comp package) of X5M and X6M are coming.
  • An obvious bit: BMW is planning to have designs celebrating 50 years of M GmbH for multiple models with production dates between March 2022 and March 2023.
  • Something is happening with the autonomous driving efforts: the "Fully Autonomous Driving" feature no longer has an intro date, and "Personal CoPilot" is now delayed by two years.
  • For the readers outside North America: G81 will start production in November 2022 and have a full run up to the end of production of G21. There will be a single model: Comp xDrive. As expected, it will be in LCI configuration (for instance, the new i4 widescreen dash will be standard). As far as I can see, everything that you can have on a G80, will be available on G81.
  • Another Euro-specific bit of good news: S58 will be EU7 compliant.
  • Some new options coming to existing models (what hasn't yet been mentioned):
    • F39: gold colored wheels and gold accents in March 2022.
    • F40/F44: new M Sport design elements and M brakes in July.
    • F95/F96/G05/G06: Shadowline headlights in April.
  • iX M60 will make 560hp. xDrive40 and xDrive50 have been bumped to 320hp and 515hp.
  • Trying not to leave any stone unturned in their quest to make things as confusing as possible, the electric versions of G28 (the Chinese market LWB 3 series) will be called i3, specifically i3 eDrive35L and i3 eDrive40L.

Will it get the "pure version" of the S58 or a further upgraded B58?

You think too well of me if you expect me to know this kind of detail about a car that's still almost 4 years away.

It seems very reasonable given the G42 doesn't arrive until mid 2021. For the M to come a year and half after the Series model isn't bad at all.

It will be interesting to see how the possibility of a new M240i plays out with your previous comments (in July 2018) that the G42 may only get the B48. Of course that could have changed now, but it seems to me that a high output B48, let's say ~350hp, would make sense for a neo-M240i. It would be lighter than the I6. And maybe by 2022, B58 models will have adopted the *45i and M*45i moniker, opening up M*40i for use with the B48.

Interesting. And we have confirmed that ID7 is coming to both (including M variants) starting aug19?

Actually, I'm not sure about the exact timing of this anymore. Regular X3s and X4s - definitely mid-2019. But M variants could continue using the existing system until early 2020.

My problem is I have conflicting information and don't know which source to trust.
