BMW roof rack systems

Fitted the original BMW base support system (lockable) and the BMW roofbox 320 last weekend.
It's very easy to mount the system to the car (first ever for me);

Some pics;

So, what do guys and girls normally do, put the box to one side or in the middle?

Is it possible to install the bars further apart? If you want to transport long object, I would prefer a longer distance between them.

I would install the box on one side for easier access.

No, the bars are in fixed positions in the roof rail. The bars are bolted directly to the car with a special torx-screwdriver to reach 9Nm.

Looks good, how far is the gap between the bar and roof?

One thing that always annoys me is how high some of them look.

As for the box; personally I would always fit it in the middle of the roof rather than to one side, unless I am also fitting a bike next to it

Digging up a really old thread. For those with a roof rack system, is it really noisy if I leave it on? What about with the toolbox? Is that even worse?

Yes, it's noisy. And affects mpg, so remove them if you don't need them.

Here are the bars (and ski rack) on my M135i from various angles:

Looks good, ive been thinking about getting a set of these and the bike racks. Anyone know the best place to get them from int he UK and their cost, ie do they have to come direct from BMW or can you buy thule ones that fit just aswell?

Also, do they mark the car ATALL whilst mounted, ie if dirt gets trapped underneath do the vibrations scratch? I was always put off installing roof bars on my Golf, as they had no fixed mounting point like the F20 and tightened against the bodywork on a lip, aside from how unsafe they would be if they came loose, i could always envisage them scratching the paintwork once tightened down.

The BMW ones didn't mark my car - they attach using bolts and don't actually tighten snug against the paintwork as far as I could tell.

The bars don't touch the paint at all.
They bolt on easily, simple design, really good piece of kit.
You wouldn't want to leave these on though, they are noisy at speeds.
