1 series hatch coming to the U.S.? - Roundel

In the Sept. issue of Roundel, it said that the 1 series hatch will come to the U.S. I'm not sure if that's really possible?

The car's front still looks ugly to me, but interior looks good, and a 118i with 6MT and sport suspension would certainly fit my needs.

If there's not a chance of it happening, why would Roundel report it? Their information is usually pretty good, and I can't imagine them going to press without having had their story confirmed by someone at US HQ.

I'd love to see the 1 series hatch over here in the US.

Great little car. Not enough RWD hatches over here to begin with.

You made me pull out my copy to reread. Indeed they say on pg30 that the 5 door will be available in the US in 6months. Either they know something no one else does, or they meant to be referring to an X1.

This would definitely be my next car. I want a 5 door hatch as my next vehicle, I need those 4 doors and cargo. I've been looking at everything out there and nothing compares to my current 135. I'm thinking maybe Mini Countryman, but if a 123d would ever become available?? Sign me up!

I tried the new 120d the other day. Very impressive torque. And fast too.
A pity you don't get it in the US!

I wonder why BMW can't just make it an on-demand model. For example US dealers don't have to stock them, well maybe one for a test drive model. What I'm saying is since BMW claims that they don't sell just make it were if a customer wants one he or she must order one and put a deposit down.

They probably would not do a diesel because of our emissions!

I think it is the cost of federalization that deters BMW from presenting that option to us. That being said I do agree with your idea. I would take it a small step further and make it a European Delivery only option, if BMW is worried about people backing out of the deal. I think I have mentioned it before if I were BMW I would make all options (Cloth seats, Individual Colors, M3 GTS, etc...) available to one of my largest markets (North America) just require non-refundable deposits and European Delivery.

It is more than just federalization. Include suitability and cost as well as we have covered more than many times before that US buyers would not take to certain models available elsewhere and that is because US buyers have a different perception of BMW than other markets.

For the US BMW is seen as Sporty luxury - It is more select with it's products then you go to Germany and it is far more broad in product choice.
Then you have specific segments - The common hatch is not popular in the US as is the Station wagon - Sports cars in the BMW sense such as the M3 GTS was not considered because of federalisation costs and that M3 owners of the greater majority will not pay such a high price for an M3 without luxuries.

But in terms of federalisation. BMW will not commit to series production in a segment that has evaporated or is non-existant.

I hear you and I understand BMW is a business. However I slightly disagree that BMW won't commit to a series production in a non-existent market. I don't think there was anything like the X6 when it first came out. Also in the case of the 1-Series Hatch BMW is already building the car in other markets. It's not a case where North America alone is asking for it.

BTW - the most recent recent Roundel says that the hatch is NOT coming to the US. You'd think they'd at least admit their earlier mistake, then.

Very likely but if they send it over here with the same engines found in the 3 series it's basically the same car just different design. Which with the 3 Series being federalization i don't see the point of doing the 1 Series too.

Here is a list of hatchbacks sold in the US, the market that supposedly doesn't like hatchbacks.
Chevy Sonic
New Chevy Spark
Ford Fiesta
Ford Focus
Honda Fit
Hyundai Accent
Hyundai Elantra Touring
Hyundai Veloster
Kia Rio
Kia Forte
Lexus CT200
Mazda 2
Mazda 3
Mazda Speed 3
MB B Class hatch-coming
Mini Cooper
Mini Coupe hatch
Mits Lancer Sportback
Nissan Versa
Scion xD
Subaru Impreza Hatch
Suzuki SX4
Toyota Matrix
Toyota Yaris
VW Golf
VW Polo - coming
Volvo C30

Those are all hatchbacks. Sure, there are variations in style and some may be called "sport wagons", but really, they are hatchbacks.
Many of them sell well.
There are a LOT of hatchback in the US market.
What we don't get a lot of are the "hot hatch" versions.
Ford is going to sell the Focus ST with 250hp in a few months.

I'm not a fan of the 1 series hatch, but there really isn't any good business reason not to sell it here., except that BMW will have to charge a lot for it.
Still Audi manages to sell plenty of A3's as it's been available in the US for a long number of years and a new one is on the way.
VW is bringing a new Golf R.
These are not inexpensive hatchbacks either, and they offer quite a bit of performance.

That said, I'm waiting for BMW to bring some picts already for the 2 series that is replacing the 1 series coupe.
Enough BS, let's see this thing.
A LOT of us are waiting!
My 135i lease is up at the end of June, and BMW doesn't have a replacement to show us.

Its not just the engine, but the body that needs to be pass US standards.

Crash testing for example (as EU crash tests are different). And other safety standards, such as lights etc...

Thats why there are subtle differences from the US 3 series to the EU 3 series for example.
