A buddy bought a Rivian. It has an unfixable clunk. They've replaced tires wheel hubs, hydraulic lines, most of the suspension... It still does it. It's also a HUGE pain in the ass to get services, you can't just drop it off at your local dealer and pick up a loaner like a BMW. I think the ratings for the top 3 at a minimum are a bit of brand identity bias. |

There was 47,203 units sold for Rivian vs 362,244 BMW in the US alone for 2023.
I’m sure the first buyers for Rivian were employees/investors/former Tesla fanboys etc. skewing the percentage. |

I’m not. Between Mercedes, Audi and BMW stores I’m involved with, Mercedes and Audi have more issues post-delivery than BMW has and that includes the big stop delivery BMW had with the braking system couple of months ago.
There is no shittier and frustrating feeling than picking up a C 43 or new E Class at $1,500+/month only for a battery or failure to pop up right after you drive off the lot only to be told fix or parts are not available and you’re out of your brand new car for at least a month - and I’m not exaggerating. |

I am skeptical of Rivian, BMW, and Tesla being the Top 3.

They put these surveys out early in the buying process - I’ve received a number of them. Initial satisfaction is great on the Tesla. Then reality of the poor quality begins to emerge. That said, there are people out there - some of whom I know firsthand - who are convinced Tesla is the best car of all time. It has to do with the simplicity and ease of use more than anything else.

Gen Z fan boy mentality. The same mentality that pays millions to a banana duct taped to the wall!

I’ll take it. #2 on the list but the first brand with actual quality rankings…

Rivian’s ranking could be a combination of the "new and shiny" factor and delivering on expectations for their niche (adventure EVs). Tesla's drop might signal a gap between hype and execution (or the fact that Musk is now a political figure).
I suppose BMW's strong position on one hand might reflect consistent product quality, especially in driving dynamics and luxury ~ OR ~ it might be that we have our own fanboy community that's driving this up. On that note, as for "cults": EV buyers often rally around tech and innovation – Rivian and Tesla play into that heavily. But BMW also has its own "cult," built on decades of brand loyalty, engineering, and driving-awesomeness. (And other than some recent design aesthetic misses, I have few complaints). So I guess the question then is really just, does the ranking have merit? Probably, but context matters. Rivian's customer base is smaller and more niche, while BMW and Tesla cater to broader audiences, which inevitably leads to mixed experiences. Satisfaction is also about delivering on what your customers expect, and BMW seems to have nailed that balance between legacy and EV transition. One thing I'd be curious to hear about is if others think Rivian will hold that spot long-term... |

I do daily model 3 because it’s easy to live with and fun to drive and has no drama and it’s fast and extremely safe and had a great autopilot and it’s cheap to drive, cheap to buy and cheap to maintain and I spent 0$ for maintenance in the last 50k driving it, and I don’t give a 💩about musk. And yes I drive my M2 when I’m in the mood of “real” manual vroom vroom driving. And I’m a BMW fanboy. |
