According to Automobile, as recently as this past Summer, BMW was working with McLaren on producing a BMW version of the next-gen McLaren Super Series model. The BMW version would have seen the Super Series model wrapped in BMW bodywork and interior, with bespoke cylinder heads for the V8 engine part of the hybrid powertrain. BMW M head Frank Van Meel even spent considerable time this Summer working in Woking (McLaren headquarters) on this tie-up.

The plans are have now been shelved, however. As a senior BMW manager explained: "It's a great piece of kit." "But we came to the conclusion that it is the wrong car for these fast moving times."

Reportedly, BMW will go it alone with a car that’s more highly advanced in terms of the electrification of its powertrain.

If BMW truly believes "the future is electric" why would they waste resources developing anything but? The i8 is BMW's halo car at the moment. The next one will be sans ICE.

What a shame that is.

Possibly the most exciting thing I have read in years about BMW and they've put a stop to it.

I wonder if has something to do with EV development credits from the German government?

If that was the logo they were going to use. Then it's worth scrapping.

That's a much bigger investment and therefore larger risk than re-skinning an existing car. I'll believe when I see it.

Even the 2016 i8S didn't materialise, so I'm not holding my breath.

which means they realised they dont need mclaren and will make one themselves
Pretty sure that means BMW thinks there's no money in real sports cars and they want to focus on money making electric people movers.

McLaren dynamic + BMW everything else, can't really think of a greater package...that has been wasted.

As much as I want to see one...

As much as I would have liked to see one, I feel this is the right decision. The ICE engine is most certainly on end time.

BMW, wrong or right has missed the opportunity to showcase a traditional super car like its peers.

To one now would somehow make seem like a follower not the leader that it should be.

Electric or perhaps another form of propulsion is the future and it should shock and awe with a masterpiece just like the M1.

I am rooting for them to make something that may seem clinical and boring into something that will energize (no pun intended!) the brand.

Translation:

By the time this car came to market, it would be outdated in terms of where BMW is looking to go with the brand's electrified vehicle lineup. Reading further between the lines, it suggests to me that BMW is building some sort of high performance hybrid sports car using a combustion engine with, at most, 6 cylinders (an I6). This could be the next i8 or it could be another new model. So, its unfortunate that the McLaren mashup won't happen, but its not all bad news.

On another note - maybe BMW will still yet make use of the McLaren V8, perhaps with their own cylinder heads that the article mentions they have developed. As I said in another post recently, the N63 is long in the tooth (though still competitive for now), and borrowing the McLaren engine would give them a modern V8 architecture to ride out until V8s themselves disappear (as much as couple decades from now).

Guys BMW doesn't need Mclaren. It would be nice but they already have enough technology to go it alone. I suspect whatever it is will be ground breaking because they wouldn't do it alone if it won't be. Just my 2 cents.
