2014 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix
Will be quite epic if this is the last two races of the season. Like Senna-Prost back in 1989 and 1990. Where turning points and crucial moments of the season. We might see similar drama this year with Hamilton and Rosberg.
Cooler Temperature and weather could have an effect on the tire temperature and maybe unpredictable weather sometimes postpone the qualifying to the morning before race. Should be good! Vettel has won here 4 of the past 5 years. He's going to be hungry for another. I'm predicting RBR on the podium but not Vettel....
In other news, I was just reading about the 2015 regs and the rules around nose structure, check it out: http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2014/09/0...e-regulations/ Here's a couple shots of that Prost-Senna run-in that @E90Slam mentioned Last edited by 954Stealth; 09-30-2014 at 03:00 PM.. |

Although its early, but seems like the typhoon will impact raceday. There might be a case of the race postpone to Monday if wind and gust are deemed too dangerous.

Honda releases first image of new V6 turbo power unit
Honda has released the first image of its 2015 power unit ahead of this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix.
Honda will return to F1 as a power unit supplier for McLaren next year and this weekend in Suzuka will show off video and audio of its new V6 turbo for the first time. McLaren has said it is its cars might run with Honda engines before pre-season testing next year, but a date has not yet been set. "Working toward Honda's F1 participation starting in the 2015 season, development of the power unit is entering its prime phase at our R&D facility in Sakura (Tochigi, Japan), where we transferred our automobile motor sports development earlier this year," Yasuhisa Arai, Senior Managing Officer of Honda R&D, said. "In addition to conducting simulations, we have moved onto the next stage where we conduct full-fledged bench tests of the engine while connecting the turbocharger and energy recovery systems. "In the meantime, our racing operation base in Milton Keynes, United Kingdom, has become fully operational. At this time, we are unveiling an image of our power unit that is under development. The whole team is concentrating on this development, getting ready for the forthcoming start of F1 participation in 6 months. Please stay tuned for further updates." The Honda website gives little detail about the new power unit, although diagrams explaining how the current generation of hybrid engines work shows a conventional layout of the turbocharger in line with Renault and unlike Mercedes' successful split turbine and compressor. However, an actual photo of the engine has not been released so the secrets of the Honda power unit are likely to remain just that until the start of next season. We haven't seen a good race between ROS and HAM in a while so I'm hoping for a battle between them two. The typhoon forecast should make things quite interesting!
Honda's photo seems to be pretty generic. I would think that they'd take some design cues from the Merc PU as I'm sure Renault and Ferrari will be implementing similar designs next season. Unless Honda has something up its sleeves. |

Rumor mill is that Honda are three months behind where they hoped to be in development at this time, and that the engine is way down on power and reliability. Sorry McClaren! lol

Here's the sole source of the rumor that I can find at the moment. http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns29015.html The high uncertainty surrounding Fernando Alonso's future could be connected with rumours emerging from the Honda camp. It is well known that the Japanese manufacturer, returning to F1 with McLaren next year, has made an audacious bid to lure the highly rated and increasingly frustrated Spaniard from Ferrari. In the past few days, the extent of the disintegrating relations between Alonso and Ferrari have become clear, making it seem more and more likely that he will leave the fabled but crisis-struck Maranello camp. It has stirred real fears that McLaren could dump its protege Kevin Magnussen after just a single season, with many regarding Alonso alongside fellow champion Jenson Button as an ideal pairing to steer the early direction of the works Honda project. When asked about the Alonso-Honda rumours, former McLaren champion Mika Hakkinen said: "You do have to wonder why they have not entered into any driver contracts for next season. "This is obviously because McLaren is trying to put together the best possible package," he said in his latest interview with sponsor Hermes. "Drivers who have won a championship will always find teams that want to take them. "It's obvious that when you can get the highest expertise available, you should," added Hakkinen. But according to Italy's Corriere dello Sport, the spanner in the works of Alonso's sensational switch to McLaren could be some alarming rumours emerging from Japan. The report claims Honda is about three months behind schedule in the development of its first turbo V6 'power unit', having encountered problems even greater than those struck by Renault as the troubled French marque prepared for 2014. The specialist Autosprint said Honda's development V6 currently consumes too much fuel and produces too little power. "To try to recover," the report explained, "Honda is investing massively and mobilising people and businesses around Japan."

Interesting. Ferrari has been threatening to pull out of F1, but that was always seen as 'bitching at Bernie' and not very serious. As an action, letting one of the best drivers in the world leave says a lot, but who they would replace him with says more. If they hire another world champion then it's business as usual, but if they hire a someone else (someone cheap), then they indeed might be rethinking their commitment to the sport.

I hope it's true. Alonso is way too good of a driver to the joke of a team that Ferrari has become. The only competitive part of that team the last years has been Fernando.
I have very high expectations on Honda, very high and up until seeing what Benz has achieved this year I was confident that they would bring McLaren back on top but now I'm not so sure. McLaren has the best engine this year but struggles severely with Red Bull's inferior power unit and with Williams with the Benz engine. RBR and Benz will be very hard to leap frog even if Honda delivers and Alonso is behind the wheel. Last edited by solstice; 10-02-2014 at 03:45 PM.. |

McLaren has been in transition this year.
I would expect a step up from this year to next year. How big a step is the question. Another question is the Honda PU. Most reports have been that it is behind the curve. So aero can step up but then the bottleneck would be the PU. |

They have the best engine on the grid now and are still sucking wind. IMO their problems are more extensive than power.

I don't think McLaren get the same BHP from their Merc engine as the works team does.
Side note...They paid Mercedes £6m just to get their engines remapped for Mobil fuel (who knows how much effort Merc put into that). I think Ron is trying to lure Alonso on the same basis as Merc lured Hamilton on the promise of Honda providing a stonking engine. They do have the advantage of a clean sheet design but being able to use all the info that McLaren can provide from the Merc engine layout. |

They do have Merc engines but they're a outgoing customer which means no benefits of works team status and are probably receiving limited info/data as compared to FI or Williams. Will agree that issues are more beyond power - Aero. Aero should improve given personnel changes or at least that's the expectation. |

What is all the hype about McLaren and Honda power units? As many people already mentioned, they have the best power unit on the grid, from Merc, yet they are the slowest of all the Merc-powered teams. I don't know on what basis some of you guys are saying they aren't getting enough technical support or power output as Merc's other customer teams. It seems like the problem is that the car itself is crap. The chassis isn't good and doesn't have good handling in the corners. Why would a new Honda power unit suddenly make McLaren a top team?

http://www1.skysports.com/f1/news/12...rivals-mclaren + Alonso deserves some respect but it will not be easy and it's a gamble and if Alonso has a chance to get into a Red Bull ( Vettel's ) it's a difficult choice. Staying at Ferrari however seems like the worst option for him if he wants another WC. Honda-McLaren sure sounds awesome from a historic perspective and most be tempting. |
