Well I would not have another 1 series. Not that there is anything wrong with it but it's a once owned car.
If I could the next car would be either the new M3 or Jaguar XKR and S version if it was possible. And also if I did not have to drive 20000 miles a year. |

Hmmm that's somewhat of a hard question. I would go for a mk7 golf r or an audi s3/s4. For me the issue is horsepower. I feel 300/350bhp is more than enough where I live. If horsepower wasn't an issue, I would go for a gt3

But it seems to me that the Lotus itself would be a lot bigger cost issue than the petrol consumption. It is not particularly thirsty, and the Elise is not very comfortable, so I guess you would not rack up all that many kilometers in a year?

You can find a second hand 2series LCI Lotus Elise for 28K€. For different reasons in Italy insurance and others fix costs are cheaper than a 120d. I have only one car, so the number of Km doesn't change if I change car.

But for 28K euro, you can drive 200 000 km. The car is still expensive compared to the fuel. The diesel car is not free per km either.

in the second hand market in Italy a 120d Msport cost quite the same as a Lotus Elise 2series LCI. But the Lotus is more thirsty and petrol is more expensive, so if you take in account everything a Lotus is way more expensive tha a 120d Msport. The result is that in Italy you can see lots of diesel cars and less petrol cars... |

In Norway, the electric cars have significantly reduced taxes, so they are among the best selling cars now. BMW i3, Tesla Model S, Nissan Leaf and electric Golf are all selling very well. |

I've had three hatches in a row (206RC->MkVR32->M135i) so a small RWD coupe is rather appealing to me at the moment . |
