Not that different— the z4m is e46 based .

But, being American, those guys didn’t have access to the CSL.

The biggest thing to take from this video witch a lot of people on the forums should take to them self is from 15 min and onward a bit in to the video.
Explaining what M is all about and such. To take what is available at that time and make the best out of it, and drop the talk that is so prevalent on the forums "BMW/M ain't what it used to be"
All of these cars are great at what they do and represents their ERA at their own way. The rest is nothing but personal taste.

For me personally as great as the old M cars were the new ones are so much more with both comfort and performance in mind.
So for me my favorite M so far is the 1M it ain't represented here but that was a great car and is still to this day but times moves on and so should car development also do.
Now i can't wait until we get to see the first M hybrids out there imagine a car the size of the M2 with four doors or 5 if you count the trunk. But with an electric engine helping the main engine to perform for a decent buck. While at the same time being able to pull of regular day to day stuff when wanting to chill drive but in electric mode.

Great video great cars all of them

Agreed. The problem isn't so much that M has lost their way (well, outside of not making bespoke high revving engines anymore)-- it's that BMW has lost their way. M can only do so much with the chassis they're given.

Take a CSL, make it heavier, less practical, uglier, less powerful, and with less competent handling, and you get a Z4M

Though the lack of SMG and extra torsional rigidity are nice.

It's not E46 based. Just the engine...everything else is different and it's a much rawer driving experience.

The Z4M is a much more enjoyable driving experience compared to the E46 M3, IMO.

E46 M3 CSL is the best for me.. E30 M3 was a great car at its time but now with their prices etc. is an overhyped car for me..

I mean...
the engine is the same (albeit the z4 got less power from it)
the chassis was e46 based
the body electronics are the same
the trans is from the e46 330i (and weaker, but the M3 trans didn't fit)
the diff is from the e46 M3
the brakes are the same as the e46 M3 ZCP/CSL/club sport
the seats are the same as e46 M3 seats other than the back rests

... and I don't think it's rawer than the lighter, fixed back seats seats, CF airboxed, higher specific output, available without AC or stereo, CSL that's being discussed in this thread

I've driven both...much prefer the Z4M.

Almost 10 inch difference In wheelbase. The Z4M is a riot. Never cared that much for the E46 M3 myself...it's good but not for me.

Slight aggrevation with M2C reviews

I dont think it would have changed *their* opinion much but I hate when these reviews dont use the manual transmission while reviewing the M2 comp (Chris Harris' review as well). Both of these guys clearly state they wished it was a manual. It's not impossible to find and it elevates the experience in that car dramatically imo. You can see these guys are just cruising because what I believe to be a lack of involvment. 2cents from an M2C manual owner. Also I think one version of an e92 must be in the discussion.

I'd take a Z4M over any of them, in vert or coupe form. Wish they'd just remake the damn cars and sell as new.

From their commentary, the SMG was the biggest thing they disliked in the CSL-- in fact, they said it would be improved with the trans from the M2C.

... I'd want a manual in either, as well.

While a stick might seam like the logical choice.

The M-DCT is IMO the best match for a turbo engine.

The DCT holds boost between shifts unlike the 6 speed transmission.

IMO the E46 M3 and the Z4M have timeless designs. The only two BMWs that don't look antiquated once the newer generation is released. Assuming they're in mint condition.

Absolutely. My long departed e86 Z4MC was my first M car, and to this date, it still embodies what an M car should be like. My e93 M3 and e92 M3 were both much better daily drivers, but I will always remember the Z4MC as THE one.

I will say though I much prefer the engine note of the S65. The raspy note of the S54 was really nice and fit the character of the e86 really well, but the S65 makes that deep growl that gives me the goosebumps every time my lead foot presses down on the gas pedal.

Since we never got the CSL in the US, I won't claim to know what it drives like. I can tell you though that the Z4M did a lot more than the sum of its parts and drove sharper (and harsher) than the standard e46 M3.
