Just noticed the sensor. Seem to be much lower than other cars.

Curb & bump purpose?

I got used to the Lexus front even though I don't like the look.

Rear end looks pretty good though, not the lack of a good view part.

This thing will be collecting dust in dealerships just like the i8.
At 100k+ its way overpriced.

Needs more power and nicer interior to justify the cost.

Ill take the 650. And since when did you need 10 speeds in anything but a bicycle?

Actually, for the very same reasons as a bicycle: optimum power/torque for road conditions, driving style, etc. More choices means your pistons/legs work less hard to do what they need to do, and -- this is the important part -- you burn less energy (i.e., conserve fuel). A 10-speed makes total sense in this car in particular because it's a relatively old powerplant that needs all the help it can get to maximize its fuel efficiency.

But back to the car itself ... It's growing on me. Considerably. I've always liked the interior despite its Toyota Avalon-esque cues. I dig the flush active rear spoiler, too. I'll never get over the flying C-pillar or the Prius-ish rear taillights, though.

You don't need 10 gears. That means its shifting every 7 miles of added speed. This doesn't look like its designed as a fuel sipper, uts supposed to be sporty. Duck's 335i is a world record quarter car ready to break into the 9s. Why? 2 gears, less shift time. After about 6 speeds it just seems like theyre adding more gears to be bragidocious. Hey. You have 8? I've got 10. Ha ha.

You bet it's part bragidocio because of the market for this car, which is not hardcore speed enthusiasts. It's the middle-aged upper-middle-class guy who wants the latest and greatest cruisemobile on his block full of middle-aged upper-middle-class guys.

Duck isn't trying to get its fleet to conform to government fuel efficiency standards. Lexus is -- and mostly with engines that are at least several years old in design. Fuel efficiency is the number-one reason these high-number auto boxes exist.

Finally: how do you figure the car shifts every 7 MPH? So the car's top speed is somewhere between 70 and 90 mph? It depends on how the car's being driven at the time ... and besides: I guarantee you the LC has at least one sport-oriented drive mode that eliminates 1-3 of the top gears from the mode. (The ZF8 in our BMWs eliminates the top gear in anything above Sport mode, for instance).

A big reason automakers continue to add more gear ratios to transmissions is to increase the spread between the lowest and highest ratio, which in turn can yield (small, but real) fuel economy improvements. Since you can only have so big a jump form one ratio to the next while still maintaining a smooth running vehicle (particular important in luxury vehicles), the only way to increase the spread is to add more ratios.

Which is why I frequently shift my manual from first to fourth to sixth and get lousy mileage.

I think if accelerating reasonably he is correct. I bet it is in 10th gear at 65 mph and it took 9 shifts to get there. I also agree with him on the benefit of adding another gear is minuscule once you get to 8. When we went from 3 to 4 speed automatics it was huge, but with each added gear the gain was smaller.

I also think this car will be overweight, like most Lexus's.

Under certain driving conditions, sure -- 'accelerating resonably' (whatever the heck that means) being one. Not all driving conditions, however. Nowhere near all.

I said it before, and I'll say it again -- modern transmissions with a high number of gears in passenger vehicles serve one overarching purpose: fuel efficiency. Particularly in this day and age of ECU management and its flattened and broadened power and torque curves. Engines aren't peaky anymore -- which is a reason to not have to use so many gears.

On a multipurpose road bicycle, the same principles apply: the need for fuel efficiency combined with a very narrow power band mean that many gears is an advantage, depending on conditions. It's applied physics.
