Hah that's exactly who he dealt with! Good eye my friend!

In my opinion the Roadster was one the greats too, as it was the later year one and had the same engine as the e46, but only a 5MT bc they couldn't fit the 6MT!!!

We romanticize the older cars we love like a lot of things, and probably forget about the ones that were ground-breaking due to not being our focus at the time.

I looked at various E46 M3 Cabriolets for a while before I got my Z4 this year.

Lots of them around but also lots of them in bad shape.
The e38 was the contemporary to e46/e39 7 series. Traditionally, BMW introduces a styling language in the 7, then it moves to the 5, then to the 3, then they reset with a new 7.

e38 had e46/e39 electronics/engines/tranmissions/styling language. Many parts are interchangeable between the 3.

E65 ushered in the e60/e90 era (iDrive and all).
I acknowledge this. Nowhere did I imply the styling language of the E65/66 is related to the E46 M3.

From a styling aspect, the E38, E39, and E46 are obviously related in language and concept.

The point i'm arguing is not developmental history. I'm talking strictly about time.
The point is the E46 M3 was released in 2000. MY 2001-2006.
The E65/66 was released in 2001 as a 2002 MY and ran from 2002-2008.
Except for the first year of the [E46] M3, the "contemporary" 7-Series was the E65/66.

For people going in to buy brand new E46 M3s at the time, more likely than not, the E65/66 was the 7-Series sold alongside it.

I'm talking strictly about time, nothing more, nothing less.

My favorite ///M3 ever....to me, the E46 had the perfect chassis, the perfect raspy inline six, the perfect design...just perfect all around. The design and performance still keep up after almost 15 years since its initial launch.

Me & my buddy's from before.

The E65/E66 were the culmination of many years of Chris Bangle getting the Board of Directors to believe in change in philosophy of BMW cars, that now VW's and Daimler now adhere to, the same sausage in different sizes school of design.

There are still styling elements from the E65 7 Series used in cars today.

He was right and car designers around the world knew it then and know this now. It was so different people didn't know what it was, but it was the future.

It was a revolution in design.

And you are correct in stating that the E46 M3 and E39 M5 were special and greatness oozed through the sheet metal.
Bangle was the man....

let's not forget that Bangle designed he E82 1-series coupe; a car that was very much influenced by the E46 coupe.....although IMO is even more muscular and good looking----although definitely more polarizing as well.

Lol, the e82 is hardly an example of bangle being a good designer. Best you can really say of it is that it's endearingly ugly-- Especially in non M form.

Plus it brought about the end of real M cars with the turbos

Yes, 1M coupe is actually a succession of E30, more legendary. However E46 M3 is really a M representative that rock the road.

Anyway, we all love BMW M !!!

This was what my old e46 vert looked like. White on Cinnamon and a 6-speed. That was my 1st dream car realized. I will remember that car until the day I die.

Andrew Millar is one of the best BMW sales guys in the biz. Have bought a few cars off him. He's a true enthusiast, who just got himself an f80!
