Driver Restraint System Malfunction

Hi Guys,

Got the “Driver Restraint System Malfunction” error after retrofitting one of the newer style steering wheels to my 2014 M135I. I had the battery disconnected while installing it, but I think when I reconnected it and turned the ignition on the airbag connector wasn’t in properly and that’s how I got the code.

What’s my options for getting it cleared? It’s it a dealer only thing or can I use a generic code reader to get rid of it?

Any help it’s appreciated!

You can clear it with some generic code readers.

The wheel I have has apparently come off an F30. I was told by the seller that it would fit my F20, but I’m starting to think I may have had the clip in correctly and maybe you can’t use the F30 airbag on an F20 without having the error?

Your predecessor did not complain.

That interesting. So it doesn’t make any difference if it’s come out of an F30, it should be fine on my F20?

Why? You should have wondered before retrofitting or "forever hold your peace". Perhaps.

Unless there's a more serious mistake than "From:07/01/2012 To:-" (Back to Diagrams says "From 03/2014") not the steering wheel itself (Did you know you chose wrong going with F20 rather than F21? ):

but the airbag module you suspect is the same:
Feel free to click "Back to Diagrams" or "Select another car" up there to refine your cross-referencing.

Yet, the steering wheels must be interchangeable as well, in fact, differing in some decoration(?) apart from weight only.

There shouldnt be any problem retrofitting it,as far as im aware the f30 M steering wheel is the same as the f20’s....

And you can retrofit cleanly an lci M steering wheel on a pre lci vehicle without errors or anything
