I'm pretty sure I remember the BMW UK guys on their ask a Q event through Facebook saying that they are working on a retrofit LSD for the M135i. I'd definitely be interested if it does become available, although I shudder to think at the price!

I think I read somewhere on 1erforum.de that it will be 2800 Euros plus fitting...
Not sure how official that price is though?

BMW MP latest info on diff is that it will be from Drexler thus will be plated. This means that it will wear out (eventually) and require maintenance such as oil changes. Likely to be around £2800 for the diff plus another £500 fitting(?).
I (like quite a few others on here) have recently had the Birds/Quaife ATB diff fitted to my car. It's a geared unit so is "fit-and-forget". It does make a discernible difference and makes the car far less prone to spinning up inside rear wheels or killing power if you leave the DSC on. Should also mean my rear brake will last longer too! I had mine supplied and fitted at Birds for £2000. |

I ran a plated LSD on my previous BMWs for several hundred thousand km without any other maintenance than the oil changes all differentials need. I would not worry about plated clutches. In my experience, the TorSen differentials (like Quaife) get the power down well on track days for good lap times, but the plated differentials react more predictably on/over the limit, making it easier to do drifting. It also works better if you lift a wheel off the ground by jumping kerbs.
Most race car teams seem to go for plated differentials. |

FWIW I've found the Quasife in my car is perfectly well behaved on the road and if anyhitng, slightly better behaved than the plated one in my GT3. I think you'll find that raceteams use plated diffs because they are maintainable, predictable from a drivers point of view but mainly because you can set them up with different ramp ratios and locking conditions to suit the tracks they're running on.
