120D N47 engine issue's ?

Hi,

I've settled on buying a 2013 F20 120d m sport.

As with all the diesels it has the N47 engine.

Have the timing chain issue's been sorted on the N47 engine now ? I've read of a few people who have had the chain done on 2012 models which is a slight concern to me.

I've found no reports of a 2013 model having issue's.

All you can do is listen to it carefully at idle, if you can hear a swish swish noise under the diesel chug then it's the chain and don't be fobbed off by a salesman if they say "They all sound like that".

I would like to think the modified parts were fitted post 2012 so you should be ok, check the parcel shelf for a worn edge suggesting the tailgate isnt quite right. Listen for knocking in the rear which can be shock top mounts or hatch "D" ring clatter and look at the front seatplates underneath for corrosion. Operate the blower and A/C, if it sounds boomy when the fan spins up the blower mod needs doing.

There are two service actions on the F20 at the moment, bulkhead drain grommets being removed and an engine bay corrosion alert which is just a terminal gets insulated to protect it.

OK, thanks for the heads up.

Im looking for a 2013 model with less than 10,000 miles on it so hopefully it shouldn't have any issue's at all aside from the service actions.

Don't want to worry you but mine was 9 months old in May 2013 when I bought it as an AUC with 9,400 miles on.

In the last 11 months it has needed the following warranty work:-

Blower mod.
Timing chain, guides, rollers, tensioners and water pump timing gear replaced.
Both front seat frames replaced.
Oil pan (Sump casting) replaced due to microfracture leading to engine oil leak.

It's unlikely you will have many issues but the warranty is great so don't just put up with anything you aren't completely happy with.

That's why i want as new as possible to get the warranty.

Did you get that with the warranty on the car or was that some other warranty cover you bought ? As i understand the cars have a 3 year warranty and whatever is left on it is transferred to the new owner ?

Yes with an AUC you get the balance of the manufacturers warranty so it is covered up to 3 years old. You also get the BMW rescue recovery service for the same period so don't forget to cancel any existing breakdown cover you may have.

Mine had the beginnings of the thrash at 9,400 miles when I bought it.

Once done it will sound sweet just treat it as if running in from new for about 400 miles to bed the parts in properly then drive normally and it will be fine.
